Tad Williams is an American writer born on March 14, 1957 in San Jose, California. He is an international bestselling science fiction and fantasy author of the multi-volume Memory, Pain and Thorns series, the March of Shadows series, Other Lands series, and the stand-alone War of Flowers novels. , the song of the tail chaser, the hour of caliban and the boy of the ancient city. His short fiction and science essays have been published in several anthologies. Cumulatively, more than 17 million copies of Tad Williams’ works have already been sold.

Williams’ Memory, Pain and Thorns series remains one of the most underrated and least read series in existence. probably the length of the books might scare some people. for example, dragonbone chair is the shortest novel in the series and is still close to 700 pages. Overall, this series incorporates the most classic fantasy elements: dark wizardry, an epic quest, and an unlikely hero. however, what makes this novel unforgettable is one important thing; williams nailed the construction of the world. even though it retains several traditional fantasy elements, they still appear in new shapes and forms.

There is not a single time when you have a thought like “this has been done before” when reading the book. in fact, that’s weird considering the repetition in most fantasy literature you’ve ever read. the world of osten ard remains one of the most vivid places in literature, and its inhabitants are also amazingly memorable.

This is the second book in Tad Williams’ Memory, Sadness and Thorns series. the series launched one of the most significant fantasy authors of our time. In Osten Ard, the evils of the Storm King cover the land, the nation is torn by war, and nature thrown off balance by a tide of evil slides into permanent winter. Simon, who once served as a kitchen helper, is now the hero hiding in the Yiquanuc troll strongholds with prophetic dreams. only he along with the area of his companions are able to save the earth. however, to do so, he has to undertake the second part of his journey to the Farewell Stone.
The first novel in the series went to great lengths to set up the world. as a result, not much exposure was required for the parting stone. this freed the author to do what he apparently does best: write amazing novels, notably cinematic and fantasy. There is an epic scope to the Memory, Pain and Thorns series that makes both David Lean and Tolkien proud.
Simon is a great reluctant hero type of character. he is often bitter and resentful as he progresses through the story. Simon rarely understands the meaning of all the events that occur and never volunteers. however, he is unable to escape the foreground of the stage. in fact, he mostly alternates between self-loathing and self-pity, which makes him quite believable given all the circumstances around him. and yet, very slowly, the reader begins to notice the subtle changes, because of all the things this book addresses, it is also a bildungsroman.
sometimes the novel is moving, sometimes it’s funny. however, the fact remains that it is still poignantly epic. this is the right book to read if you like high fantasy. Like the first book in the series, this novel also ends on such a cliffhanger that you’ll have to look straight to the next novel in the series.
