In Veronica Roth’s first novel, Divergent, the reader meets the main character, Beatrice Prior. She is a young teenager living in a devastated area of Chicago that is divided into five “factions”. each faction represents a specific virtue that all members pledge to uphold. the virtues are honesty, selflessness, bravery, calmness and intelligence. At the tender age of sixteen, Beatrice and other sixteen-year-olds like her must choose a faction to which they will dedicate the rest of their lives. their choices are celebrated with initiations. beatrice changes her name to “tris” and is faced with the difficult decision of staying with her family or dedicating herself to who she truly believes she is. she also has a secret that she has kept hidden because it could mean death for her or, if used wisely, could save her loved ones. Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without the young love interest and friend of hers, called “four” of her. it is her emotional struggle in this torn society that tests her courage, strength and beliefs. It is this journey undertaken by these strong characters that engages the reader and makes these compelling books quick and easy to read.

In addition to Divergent, the second novel in Veronica Roth’s trilogy, Insurgent, was equally well received and highly anticipated. he did not disappoint the faithful followers of him. countdowns can be seen for her third book, “allegiant” on all of her websites and facebook page. It will be released on October 22, 1013. She has also written two other “Divergent” offshoots or short stories based on events that happened in the original “Divergent” novel as told by the character, “Four”. for example, one of those short stories focuses on chapter 13 of “divergent”. Roth often thinks about how the other characters might feel at a particular event. she has said that she wanted to explore some of these events from the perspective of four. Her readers often send her emails or comments about what they would like to see her explore in her books. Veronica Roth has also written a short story not specifically related to the famed trilogy, which is included in a collection of other dystopian stories by various authors titled Fragments and Ashes. there’s even a trilogy collection coming out in early 2014.
The new movie “divergent” is getting its share of attention. with entertainment magazines touting it on their covers, it’s almost impossible to miss. The film even garnered a coveted promotion at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013. It stars Theo James as “Four” and Shailene Woodley as “Tris.” also stars Mile Counter. These young, attractive and talented new stars are sure to be popular with teenage viewers. hopefully, they will reprise their roles in the remaining films of the trilogy. merchandise is just beginning to appear with t-shirts bearing the film’s tagline, “a choice will define you.”
it’s hard not to admire veronica roth as she is truly a talented writer. Considering that she is just starting out, one can only hope that she has many more wonderful stories to come. her stories will continue to captivate readers, sending them on adventures that only exist in the imagination. she can be proud to have produced such thought-provoking writing that will encourage young adults to examine and question the world in which they live.
