I have a kindle, which I love. While there is something about reading physical books, a kindle or e-reader has so many advantages that it’s a great thing to have. there are so many great authors to choose from these days; it can be hard to decide what to read.

it’s also very light if someone has trouble holding heavy books; this is a great advantage. kindles are also great if you don’t have a lot of space; instead of having piles of books cluttering your home, you can have them conveniently located in one small device. no need to compromise on one or two books, you can take your entire shelf with you! that’s also great if you travel.

- overdrive. many public library systems use overdrive for their ebook collections. yes, libraries have extensive online book options. you can easily download free books from your library system. i like to use libby app to use overdrive from my phone. which works just like a physical library. you can check out books, put books on hold, and even recommend books for the library to purchase. the best part? no late payment fees. Since books are automatically returned on their return date, there’s no chance you’ll forget to return them and have to pay fees. so this really is free. no money has to come out of your hands to use overdrive. all you need is a regular library card, and you’re good to go!
- project gutenberg is a digital library that uploads free public domain ebooks to make them available. is an excellent resource for free eBooks, but it can be difficult to find books you’re interested in reading if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Here’s how to get Project Gutenberg books on your Kindle, and here’s a list of over 2,780 Project Gutenberg books you can download, divided by category.
- free e-books from amazon. Yes. amazon has free kindle ebooks! Search for e-books and rank them from lowest to highest price. be sure to choose books that have a $0.00 kindle price. that’s more unpredictable, since it depends on what books amazon decides to put up for sale at any given time.

- Amazon Prime Member Credit: This is specifically for Prime Members. Before you order that item, check to see if Amazon is offering you a free digital credit for delaying your order. if you don’t need your order within 2 days, it’s worth getting the credit. sometimes your package will still arrive before the later shipping date. These credits can be used to purchase eBooks from Amazon’s Kindle Collection. Be careful: these credits expire, so you want to use them before they do or message amazon to see if they will extend them for you (ymmv)
- sign up for author emails. Authors want you to read their books, so they often arrange giveaways or tell you about deals on their books. google an author you particularly like and sign up for their emails, and you might be entered to win a free book.

freebooks.net: is a website that allows you to download five free e-books per month. that’s an easy way to download and read free ebooks.
e-books.net: ebooks.net has 400 popular classics available for free. once you add them to your shelf, they’re yours. no need to go back!
manybooks.net – Has many free e-books available for download in various formats. Not all books are free, but they have plenty of free options to check out.

freecomputerbooks.com: This site is the place to be if you’re looking for computer science, math, or technical books. they don’t actually have the books, but they redirect you to sites that do. is a great place to go if you’re looking for a specific book and don’t want to spend money on it.
book loan: this is only good for kindle books. That’s only available to Kindle users, and you’ll need an Amazon account for it to work. This virtual exchange website allows you to lend and borrow books from other members. you can only borrow each book once (and lend each book once), so choose wisely and go fast if you see something you want.

e-book planet: is the home of free classic literature. they take a small selection of out-of-copyright classic novels and remake them to make them more readable and accessible.

All of these programs are subscription based, but all of these programs have free trials of different lengths. if you cancel on time, you’ll get free books. only do this if you remember to cancel on time (set a notification on your phone) or if you can afford the monthly fee:
kindle unlimited: is a subscription service managed by amazon that gives you access to thousands of books to read for free on your amazon kindle for a monthly fee. however, they offer a free trial that you can cancel at any time.
reading iq: has thousands of children’s books for children of all levels, from pre-readers to higher levels. They also have books in Spanish. you can get a free month when you sign up.
epic: is another reading resource for children. that is more of a teaching resource, and allows you to track your child’s progress and personalize your children’s reading. they have a 30-day free trial for parents and it’s completely free for educators. this is great if you plan on learning or homeschooling this year.
scribd: You have unlimited free books and audiobooks and tons of magazines when you sign up for their subscription. they have a 30-day free trial.
