In a new book by Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd, “Fire Can’t Kill a Dragon,” Martin emphasizes that this particular story would never have happened in his version of the characters.

“My little finger would never have given Sansa to Ramsay,” Martin said in an interview for the book. “never. he’s obsessed with her. half the time he thinks she’s the daughter he never had, that he wishes he had, if he’d married catelyn. and half the time he thinks she’s catelyn, and he wants her for himself .”
“He’s not going to give it to someone who would do bad things to him. That’s going to be a lot different in the books,” he added.

Littlefinger’s entire reputation in both the books and the show was his incredibly detailed knowledge of the inner workings of most of the noble families in Westeros. That means she should have known Ramsay was a direct threat to Sansa’s physical and emotional well-being.
during season five, entire fandom discussions on reddit were devoted to discussing littlefinger’s motives: did he care about sansa at all, or was she just a mere pawn in his game?
In season six, Sansa completely escaped Ramsay’s clutches and confronted Littlefinger, voicing what many fans had been wondering all along.

but the in-universe explanation of the show was simply that the little finger’s intelligence had a huge blind spot when it came to screws. Pinkie tried to apologize to Sansa, telling her that she didn’t know and that she had “underestimated a stranger”.
“Ramsay isn’t known everywhere as a psychopath,” said the show’s co-producer and writer, Bryan Cogman, in Hibberd’s new book about the show. “littlefinger doesn’t have that intelligence about him. he just knows boltons are scary and creepy and can’t be trusted.”

In the books, Sansa is still safe in the valley while Littlefinger works his traumatic machinations on a different young woman: Jeyne Poole.
Jeyne was Sansa’s childhood best friend and grew up in Winterfell with the Stark children. She ended up in the custody of Littlefinger, who in turn decided to use Jeyne’s knowledge of Winterfell to pass her off as Arya Stark. So, in the books, Jeyne (disguised as Arya) is the one who is married to Ramsay Bolton and is used as a pawn in trying to control the North.
jeyne appears in one of the first scenes of “game of thrones”, sitting next to sansa during a feast at winterfell. her but she was not mentioned or seen again on the show. so when it came time to explore bolton’s plot in the north, the showrunners used sansa instead of her. That meant that Sansa, not Jeyne, was brutally sexually assaulted by Ramsay on her wedding night and tortured for many weeks afterwards.
“by not having jeyne, they used sansa for that,” martin said in the new book about the hbo show, which ended after eight seasons in 2019. “is that better or worse? you can make up your mind there. funnily enough, i never got turned down for that in the book because no one cared about jeyne poole that much. they care about sansa.”
