“The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman nearly killed Negan, the foul-mouthed bat-wielding savior, three times in the comics.
in “negative lives!” In the new single issue of “The Walking Dead,” Kirkman describes how he almost got rid of the character during one of his last comedic appearances.
“negan was supposed to die in issue 174,” kirkman wrote in the lyric tricks section at the end of “negan lives.” “I even wrote the entire script for the number, which ends with Negan dying.”

In the letter, Kirkman says that Maggie would have shot Negan in the 2017 issue. Negan brutally killed her husband, fan-favorite Glenn, years earlier in issue #2. 100.
kirkman previously teased negan’s alternate fate in the #n card hacks. 176, writing: “Is this where I admit that in the original script he was shot by Maggie and Charlie asked me to change it? Is that true? Who knows?!”
At the time, it wasn’t clear if he was joking. In July’s new comic, Kirkman shared the email that he said convinced him to keep Negan alive.

After submitting the proposed script to Adlard, Kirkman received an email back. Adlard said he wasn’t “a little convinced” by Negan’s death and thought a redemption story would have worked for him. He suggested that Negan’s fate was a cliché and expressed his desire to “break the mold”.

I know negan wasn’t going to last, so this issue wasn’t a surprise, unlike the andrea saga, but it’s still sad to see him go. well done
… except… I’m not a bit convinced by the way maggie shoots him. Are you trying to say that this is some kind of “identification” where deep down, that’s what she wants to do, even though she’s convinced she doesn’t have to shoot him? she feels a bit forced.
Like I said, the more I got to know Negan, especially over the last couple of years, the more I wished he’d stayed until the end. I wish redemption had worked for him. this is not a criticism of you at all, but rather a criticism of western literature/entertainment [at least], where, because most of us consider the death penalty (thus the adage of the eye by eye) is abominable, we carry it out. in fantasy almost no western villain gets away with it without dying at the end. we as an audience always demand the ultimate punishment for our fantasy villains. It’s a shame we haven’t broken the mold with Negan… the baddest of the bad, but a long way down the road to redemption and forgiveness, who pays the usual ultimate price: death. imagine, if he lived, what could we say about our society?
sorry for my rant, it’s something I’ve always felt about our entertainment industry for a while, and this seemed like a good place to pass it on.

kirkman said adlard’s email made him change his mind about killing negan, something he didn’t want to do anyway. (During the “The Walking Dead” New York Comic Con panel he attended in 2019, Kirkman acknowledged that Negan was his favorite character.)
“charlie’s passionate and thoughtful email about the state of villainy in western culture really moved me,” kirkman wrote. “Having Negan go from being the vilest villain to being reformed was a powerful message.”
“Charlie made that story so much better,” Kirkman continued. “You know what that is right there… a great contributor. So I immediately went to work and rewrote the last six pages of the issue… and we ended up with a much more moving and thoughtful ending that I’m much more proud of what he had originally done.”
In issue #174, Maggie confronts Negan, prepared to kill him, but relents after he begs her to take his life. her attitude makes her change her mind. She leaves Negan with the thoughts of her refusing to give him what she wants so easily.
and then readers don’t see negan again until the final issue of the comic.
“I knew the series finale would come almost 20 issues later, and I didn’t want to upset my plans by adding more Negan stories,” Kirkman wrote of why the character didn’t reappear until the very end. problem.
In issue #193, readers discover that Negan has been living out his days in isolation on a farm. he is seen laying flowers on his wife’s grave near the end of the comic.
“I thought #174 was a great ending to the character, with the scenes from #193 acting as a cute, lazy bookend…and that was it,” Kirkman said.
kirkman was inspired to write ‘deny lives!’ to help comic shops
at the end of “deny lives!” Kirkman said he was inspired to put the comic together after a conversation with Pacific Comics co-founder Bill Schanes about the state of the comics industry amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“bill called publishers and urged them to come up with ‘big, flashy projects’ that would bring people back to comic shops, giving shop owners a firm foundation to get their businesses up and running again kirkman wrote. .
The conversation led to Kirkman revisiting Negan while he picked up the publishing costs himself.

“I sent charlie a short email, explaining the goal of getting people into the stores; how we would make the book for free, even pay for the production and printing ourselves, and donate all the money to the stores” , kirkman wrote.
“charlie is a great man and he jumped at the opportunity to do something for the store owners that got us to where we are today,” he added.
all proceeds from “deny lives!” go straight to the comic shops. in addition to the regular covers with the title in a red font, some comic shops received one gold and two silver variant covers. some are already over $300 on ebay.
is this for ‘negative lives’? kirkman: ‘never say never’
kirkman said the numbers negan story arc no. 174 to no. 193 was his side mission to recover the remains of his wife and bury them.
“I always liked the idea of Negan embarking on this mission to retrieve those remains and put them to proper rest,” Kirkman wrote.
“I can honestly say I don’t know if we’ll ever see ‘what happens next,'” he added. “for me, you see the headstone at no. 193, that story is pretty much told… but i’ll never say never. but probably never. probably…”
could we see negan get one of these alternate comedic deaths on the show? maybe, but it seems unlikely.
While it didn’t appear in the comics, there’s always the possibility of seeing the alternative in AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
The show has been known to deviate a lot, especially in recent years, from the comic. Lauren Cohan is set to reprise her role as Maggie in the yet-to-be-aired Season 10 finale before returning as a series regular in Season 11.
The idea of Maggie fatally shooting Negan is tantalizing to viewers who may still hold a grudge against Negan for brutally killing Glenn. a version of the scene from number no. 174, however, was already adapted into “The Walking Dead” before Cohan originally left the series in 2018. In season nine, episode five, Maggie also intended to kill Negan during a visit to the prison cell. jail, but he leaves because he doesn’t want to. give him the satisfaction.
“I came to kill negan and you’re already worse than dead,” maggie tells negan. “that settles it.”
Since taking over the show in season nine, showrunner angela kang and the writers room have essentially worked on a redemption story arc for the character. now that she’s killed alpha, the leader of the whisperers, it’s hard to imagine the show considering killing him anytime soon.
the season 10 finale will debut sometime later this year on amc. the network will host a virtual “twd” panel during the session at san diego comic-con house. separately, kirkman is hosting his own sdcc panel.
