Amanda Flower is an award-winning mystery author under both her pen name and her real name, Isabella Alan, and writes for children and adults alike. She is known for the Ella India Hayes and Applewood Creek series, along with the Andi Boggs series for younger readers.
Born January 23, 1980 in Akron, Ohio, Flower moved to Mount Vernon to work as a librarian right after graduation, where she lived near the Amish for three years. She has often singled out this experience as a major influence on her work, particularly on the mystery series Applewood Creek. In the series’ first entry, A Simple Death, Flower’s young protagonist Chloe Humphrey moves to the Amish countryside of Ohio to work, just as the author did in her early twenties. flower made the decision to delve into amish mysteries after brainstorming with her agent, nicole resciniti, who suggested that she use the experience of living near the amish community in her twenties as a starting point. for new material. Such was her interest in the Amish mystery concept that Resciniti managed to sell “A Simple Death” based on a 50-page proposal.
The main character of the Applewood Creek series, Chloe Humphrey, accurately reflects Flower’s experience of moving to Mount Vernon. Chloe is a 24-year-old, tech-addicted computer expert with two master’s degrees who moves to the Amish countryside because it’s the only place she can get a job. Occupations aside, Chloe’s moving experience is a lot like the author’s. it’s a fish out of water scenario with the city girl moving to the middle of nowhere. “when i was chloe’s age, i moved to ohio amish country to work at a small college. even though it was only a few hours from where I grew up in the city, it felt like landing on another planet.’ Chloe was a perfect fit for this type of story because the difference between her and her environment is so obvious. she comes from a society where technology is paramount and she can’t bear to be separated from her computer. Flower herself is a tech junkie and often feels inseparable from her smartphone. When she first moved to rural Ohio, she discovered that the cell phone signal was so bad that she had to lean on the fence at the edge of her apartment complex to even get a bar of coverage. . The protagonist, Chloe, is faced with solving the murder of an Amish bishop and although A Simple Death differs from other Amish mystery stories because its main character is an outsider, it still deals with many familiar themes such as the Amish work ethic, the belief in god and the importance of community.

In 2015, Flower won the Agatha Award for Best Children’s Novel/Ya for Andi Unstoppable, the third installment in the Andi Boggs series. This series centers on Andora ‘Andi’ Boggs, a science-obsessed 12-year-old girl who is sleeping with her older sister, Bethany, and her young aunt. Flower felt there was plenty of room for mystery novels aimed at the young adult market, having grown up an avid fan of the genre herself. As a child, she was greatly influenced by the work of authors such as Sue Gharton, Patricia Cornwell, and Marcia Muller. in her award acceptance speech, she acknowledged the loving support her parents gave her from a very young age to pursue her writing career, ‘when I was a child and I told them I wanted to be a mystery author when I grew up, they never said that was not practical, they said what can we do, how can we help and I am very grateful’. Flower also thanked other members of her family, including her brother, Andy, and her sister-in-law, Nicole.
Although flower is primarily known as a prolific mystery writer, she is also known for the humor she injects into the characters that populate her stories. she often uses real-life encounters with people as inspiration for many of the supporting characters in her books, just as she often draws on her own personal experience when crafting the narrative. she loves meeting and talking to fans, and even some of the weirder things people say are welcome because they could be potential material for a quirky new character in one of flower’s novels. Her favorite supporting character in Easy Death is Grandpa Zook, because she accepts Christianity in all its forms. The theme of faith is often prevalent in Flower’s books and she has stated that her belief has helped her through some of the most difficult periods of her life.
The author has a high productivity rate and averages between three and four books per year, although she finds it incredibly difficult to get started on a new story and, like many of us, often finds herself procrastinating anyway possible. In addition to writing, Flower is passionate about traveling and has visited many destinations around the world, including Norway, Guatemala, and Jordan.
