This 1993 story was published 18 months after Betty’s conviction and is the best-reviewed definitive book on the subject to date. Kirkus called it “heavily researched” and noted Stumbo’s sympathetic portrayal of Betty as a wife “so battered by her husband’s betrayal that her current sentence of 30 years is probably unfair.” Stumbo, a reporter for The Times, won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for “Best Book of Crime Facts” through the 12th, which is largely based on her interviews with Betty.
