In the Shadows is the first book in the detective john byron thriller series. The book features second-generation police officer Detective Sergeant John Byron. It’s set in Portland, Maine, where the sweltering summer temperatures have dropped, and residents hope to return to normal when the tourists leave. however, there is a break in the calm after the murder of a retired police officer.

Detective John takes the lead in investigating this case. Despite the storms in his personal life, John is determined to find the killers and bring them to justice. As the information he gathers begins to add up, another former Portland police officer loses his life under suspicious circumstances. investigations show that these two deaths are linked to a bank robbery that occurred 30 years ago. John discovers that most of the people involved in that case are unwilling to talk or share vital information that could help solve the puzzle of the murder. he will have to do all the work and go back in time to find all the details of the bank robbery on his account. The case becomes personal when John discovers that the bank robbery and current events are somehow related to his deceased father. From this point on, it doesn’t matter that his relentless search for the truth puts his life in grave danger.
From the findings, it is clear that Detective John was not wrong in suspecting that the two cases are somehow related. the more he works on these cases, the more evident it becomes that his life is in danger. Away from detective work, John’s life is in shambles. the suicide of his father still haunts him mainly because it was he who found his lifeless body. John’s marriage is no more, and all signs point to a nasty divorce. John drinks too much, and this is understandable, given the circumstances. however, his weaknesses do not prevent him from doing his job and completing all the tasks related to his role perfectly.
As you read this book, it’s evident that Coffin knows police procedures, the character of detectives, and the politics surrounding police departments. each investigative process is described in great detail, making it easy for the reader to imagine what is happening at any given moment. Between the Shadows is a fast-paced read with interesting twists that will make you question your conclusions about these cases. the writing is descriptive so that readers can not only visualize the setting but also feel the emotions of the characters. the cast is colorful and the main character is strong but flawed enough to draw readers in and get them invested in their fate. if you like police procedural thrillers, Shadowed In will hook you and leave you wanting more coffin writing.

Under the Depths is the second book in the John Byron detective series. the book picks up a few months after the last one. Detective John Byron is at it again, and this time he’s determined to prove that no one is above the law. the first chapter begins with the death of one of the best lawyers in portland. paul ramsey’s body was found dumped in cusco bay. The circumstances leading up to his death show that there is no way Paul accidentally drowned. There must be a connection to the multi-million dollar lawsuit that Paul recently lost. Before his death, Paul was having an amazing day. for one thing, he had just lost a case in which he expected to reap millions. he goes to the bar to drown his sorrows and gets into a fight with some random guy. What he doesn’t know is that he picked the wrong guy to fight, and his body will be the next thing pulled from the ocean.
this trip gives a glimpse of the dark side of portland. At the center of the case is a prominent law firm in the area involved in some shady dealings and strippers who do more than entertain their guests at Maine strip clubs. The story also shows the challenges good law enforcement officers face both in the workplace and at home. At one point in the investigation, it will become politically incorrect for Paul Ramsey to continue investigating. however, this does not deter this talented detective from searching for the truth. no stone is left unturned, and new evidence is gathered from the most unlikely places.
If you have a flair for police investigative procedure, character development, and scene description, the Under the Depths thriller won’t disappoint. Not only will you be able to follow seasoned detectives through their investigations, but you’ll also get a chance to see how they live. The main character, John, is anything but perfect. he’s in a taboo relationship with his youngest daughter, diane, and it’s clear his life is a mess. despite all this, john is a lovable character. his imperfections make it easy for readers to identify with him in spite of him. the rest of the cast is equally nosy, and it’s interesting to learn about their strengths, weaknesses, and life in general.
The plot of this book is complex and intriguing, and helps it unfold organically. the dialogue flows and the strategically placed twist will take you by surprise. the story is beautifully written, and it’s safe to say it’s a page-turner that will keep you up all night and thrill you from start to finish.
