In the opening sequence of the novel, Isabel Reed is introduced as a literary agent who reads a mysterious, anonymous manuscript that reveals some explosive truths about powerful people, as well as long-hidden secrets from her own past life. Hayden Gray is introduced as a veteran CIA agent in Copenhagen who is determined to keep the manuscript buried.
