David Poyer is a retired American naval officer and the author of several best-selling novels. He was born in 1949 in Dubois, Pennsylvania. Poyer then graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1971. David used to write as both an active duty naval officer and a naval reserve captain. His early services included roles in the Atlantic, Caribbean, Persian Gulf, Arctic, and Pacific, until he retired from the Navy in July 2001.
david poyer began writing in 1976 and as of 2011 had published around 33 novels. As a result, he is commonly referred to as the most famous living author of American marine fiction.

Although best known for naval fiction, in the 1980s David Poyer also wrote science fiction and alternative history under the pseudonym David Andreissen. poyer has also published short fiction and non-fiction in numerous magazines.
David Poyer’s most popular books, set in the present day, follow the career of Dan Lenson, an American. navy officer. this is a thoughtful surface navy officer whose ethical questioning sometimes conflicts with his duty. Another series that is more inclined to the adventure genre, features Lyle “Tiller” Galloway, a former Coast Guard commercial diver. both series were published by st. martin press. According to David Poyer, much of his work is often based on his own life experiences in military service, as well as as a recreational diver and cruiser.
david poyer also published another series of books set in the fictional hemlock county. The series explores the folklore and history of northwestern Pennsylvania along with the Pennsylvania oil industry, which was the original base of American industrial power. the best of these novels is Thunder on a Mountain; a book that is set in the period of the great depression. these books were praised by critics, but were not as popular as marine fiction.
david poyer currently teaches in the creative writing residency program at wilkes university in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania. Poyer lives with another novelist Lenore Hart and her daughter on the east coast of Virginia.

the med is what most people call a proper military book, it is by no means one of those dirty, fast action novels. the writer has a military background and it shows clearly in the details he has put into this novel. at its core, the novel is about a medical fleet story and the main focus is on a younger lieutenant. The medical fleet is commanded by a person who has been promoted far above his own ability, and when events call for decisive action and clear leadership, he is not up to the task.
However, we are presented with a wide range of characters in the novel with whom we can emphasize and also put the story into perspective. characters range from commanding crew to petty officers and marines. events then lead to a hostage and landing to stage a rescue.

For the first book in a series, this is a pretty good effort. Although some aspects of the book don’t work quite right (such as the strange behavior of the lieutenant’s wife), it doesn’t detract from the reader of this surprising and authentic military novel.
the gulf
those responsible for the defense policy of the gulf and great britain analyze different aspects of british policy as well as its repercussions on the security of the gulf. Seeking to foster dialogue on security and defense, the contributors decide to examine the potential and immediate threats to the security of the Gulf and underscore the need for the Gulf countries to develop a wide range of consultative mechanisms. This novel offers some valuable perspectives on more critical issues that are involved and also provides interesting insight into the views held by prominent decision makers, including General Sir Charles Guthrie, Lord Robertson, L.S. sheikh salem of kuwait and s.a. sheikh salman of bahrain.
The second book in Dan Lenson’s series has the strengths and weaknesses of the first novel. Strengths include a very clear description of day-to-day operations on US warships and a relatively clear description of the US Navy’s role in the Persian Gulf towards the end of the Iran-Iraq War. the main character an lcdr known as dan lenson is a captain whose previous ship was sunk by the iranian cruise missile and is determined to put “usn turner van zandt” on a war footing even though he is involved in some of the war in the shadow. Accordingly, it is Lenson’s duty to exercise the captain’s will, regardless of his personal doubts about the wisdom of it. It’s pretty clear that Benjamin Shaker, the captain, will use Van Zandt to avenge the loss of his previous ship.
There are a set of sub-stories in this novel: one about the senior marine chief on the minesweeper and one about 2 officers who are attached to the helicopter detachment on van zandt. there is also another story about the petty officer who is a drug dealer and another about a senate aide who is on a mission to find information about naval policies in the gulf. (The assistant here is a very tough woman who asks very difficult questions about both the leadership of the navy and the Saudis. She also serves as Dan’s future love interest.) there are many to juggle. later novels in the series solved this problem by focusing primarily on the naval section of the story.
When viewed as a whole, Dan Lenson’s series is one of the best post-World War II naval sagas ever written. However, when viewed individually, there are some weaknesses even though Dan Lenson develops into a great character over time.
