We’re just a few days away from the end of Game of Thrones Season 7, and fans are crazed waiting for leaks, hints, details, hints, anything that might tell them about the events of the upcoming episode. will we get another cersei mass murder like we did in the season 6 finale? Will “the dragon” and “the wolf” get together? Is there anything we can learn from the novels and additional chapters of the Song of Ice and Fire series? who lives? who dies for example, does cersei lannister die in the game of thrones books?
This is really hard for book readers to admit, but at this point the show is past the end of the books, and even the few Winds of Winter chapters that George R.R. Martin has read aloud at comic-cons over the years. Gone are the days when we knew Jon Snow was going to get stabbed in the finale. and those stories that are “ahead,” as we might consider them, are mostly about characters that aren’t even in the show.

is cersei, or anyone else important, dead on the books?

not. In the books, Cersei just got home from her walk of shame, and she’s alive and well and trying to make that haircut work.
in fact, the last of the “dead in the books, alive in the show” happened at the end of season 5. heck, jaime hasn’t even returned to king’s landing, he’s still in the riverlands. . so for that matter it’s brienne. the hound is still hiding in his paradise as a gravedigger. Sansa hasn’t even been back to winterfell yet. dany is lost in the great sea of grass, having fled from meereen.
One could argue that Jon is dead in the books and alive on the show, but that’s because he hasn’t been resurrected yet. not useful.
do we already know jon’s real name in the books?
no, like i said, he just got stabbed by the night watch and passed out and died. but here we have a hint of what it could be, and it comes from a character who was cut from the show.

Some of the more complex parts of the books were cut from the series because they overcomplicate things. for example, the show cut the overly complex “fake arya stark (actually jayne poole) marries ramsay bolton, and is tortured theon-style into believing she’s arya so he’ll have control of winterfell.” Instead, they just had Sansa come out (which she hasn’t done in the books yet) and marry Ramsay, which was much clearer.
Similarly, the show removed the “young griff” storyline, in which two Westerosi men join Jorah and Tyrion on their journey to Meereen, only to be revealed as a veteran of the Targaryen kings, and the son minor by elia martell and rhaegar targaryen, aegon. Aegon is currently trying to establish himself as the rightful heir and is about to challenge Dany for the throne while she is missing.
We’ve been wondering how this story will be resolved, because clearly, this aegon is a “false dragon”, to borrow a phrase from another series. Obviously, we now know that the marriage to Elia was annulled, making Jon the rightful heir. but what will be the name of him revealed of him? could he also be called aegon targaryen?
rhaegar believed that the aegon he had with elia would be the “prince promised”. he must have changed his mind when he annulled that marriage. Would she give the new son that same name, since now he would be that announced prince? That would certainly explain why the show removed the first aegon, wouldn’t it?
will winter come to king’s landing?
sir, we hope so. in the epilogue of a dance with dragons it is already snowing in the book version of king’s landing. shows the king’s landing version, hurry up!
