Tami Mikkelson, more popularly known as Tami Hoag, is an American author. She was born on January 20, 1959 in Cresco, Iowa. she is known for her best-selling romance novels and suspense novels. She has been included in thirteen consecutive New York bestseller lists and has over 22 million books in circulation to date.
personal life
hoag’s father was an insurance agent and she was born into a fairly typical family. Although she was born in Iowa, Hoag grew up in Harmony, Minnesota, a small town in southeastern Minnesota with a population of about 1,000, and according to Hoag, she doesn’t have a stoplight. Because of this, many of the settings in her novels feature Minnesota and her culture, or are somehow reminiscent of her hometown.

She was raised in an environment where everyone is ten years or more older than her, and with her home not being so close to urban centers, she was used to being alone. Because she was considered the ‘baby’, her isolation served Hoag well as she conditioned her to make up stories for entertainment.
He says, “I played with my imagination a lot,” he recalls. it was the ideal beginning for a writer. It certainly helped, especially since if you are a child in an adult world, you observe the behavior of adults. the kids are very good at it.” she also got her used to independent living, which is reflected in her confident and independent female characters, a trademark that garnered much praise from her readers and critics alike.

in 1977 she married daniel hoag, her high school classmate. Hoag, however, was unable to go to university and finish his studies due to lack of access to nearby tertiary education institutions. Personal differences led to her relationship ending in divorce.
However, despite the divorce and the stress that came with it, and despite not having a college degree, Hoag persevered to pursue his passion for writing. He took odd jobs, as a photographer’s assistant, circulating staff at the local newspaper, training show horses, and becoming a sales agent for designer bathroom fixtures.
Hoag’s career as a writer eventually took a right turn and she was recognized by award-giving bodies for her work. she was invited to read some of her work at one of then-first lady barbara bush’s literary nights, a privilege only a few writers have been lucky enough to take into account. She also had lunch with former President George H.W. bush and mrs. bush at the white house on a special literary night.

In 1988, Hoag decided to enter the romance industry as the author of Bantam Books’ line of Lovewept Books. his first book, the problem with j.j. was published for the bantam romance category. The book was a moderate success and, after a few publications, namely McKnight in Shiny Armor and Mismatch (1989), he decided to pursue writing full time and quit his other jobs.
then proceeded to take a break from the fiction category and decided to write stand-alone novels. She wrote Sarah’s Sin (1991), Heart of Dixie (1991), and Quiet Waters (1992). In 1992, he returned to writing in the romance category for the Bantam Loveswept line, publishing Sarah’s Sin (1992), Heart of Dixie (1991), Take by Storm (1992), and Last White Knight (1992), his last contribution to the line. bantam loveswept series. He also wrapped up the plot of his first novel (The Trouble With J.J.) with magic, published in 1990, ending what would eventually be called the “Henessy series.”
hoag went on to create series after series, the first being the “doucet series”, all of which are written in hoag’s definitive romantic writing style. Restless Heart (Loveswept #458) was published in 1991, followed by Lucky’s Lady (1992), Cry Wolf (1993), and A Thin Dark Line (1997). He proceeded to create a trilogy, the “quaid horse” trilogy, a series of loosely connected novels dealing with the same romantic theme.

While Hoag continued to write romance novels, either as a continuation of his ongoing series or as solo novels, Hoag expressed interest in switching to the thriller and suspense genre. suspense and mystery elements began to be crucial in his later novels, namely Dark Paradise (1994), Cry of the Wolf (1993), A Thin Dark Line (1997) and a couple more novels.
As for his gradual shift in focus, he notes, “It was a gradual progression in my work. I started adding suspense bits to the romance when I was doing little short romance books and as I grew as a writer and wanted to do more stories.” bigger, more complex and deeper, that was the natural direction for me: suspense.”
In 1995, he released his first thriller, Night Sins, which was part of the Deer Lake series. Night Sins and the series itself became a huge success, prompting Bamtam to reissue the novel in hardcover. Hoag’s reputation as a writer, particularly as a thriller and suspense novelist, grew rapidly.
This also led her to edit her previous works to add elements of suspense and create coherence with her ongoing series. Night Sins was made into a television miniseries by Valerie Bertinelli and Harry Hamlin. The series was a huge career boost for her and, as Hoag herself described it, “everything blew up,” including the sales of her previous work and her subsequent releases.
In light of its success, he launched a new series, the first was the “Oak Knoll” series, which includes the novels Deeper than the Dead (2009), Secrets of the Grave (2010) and By the Way More dark (2011), and the series “elena estes”, with the books dark horse (2002) and the alibi man (2007).
all achieved commercial success. he followed it up with the “kovac/liska” series, which featured hoag delving into more mature territory. the novels Ashes to Ashes (1999) and Dust to Dust (2000) feature elements of violence, summed up in the later titles Previous Bad Acts (2006), also known as Dead Sky.
