Originally published in 1981, this was the first complete novel to feature Joe R. lansdale on the literary scene. Working like a whodunit, it’s an extremely graphic read that’s the ideal book for anyone looking to better understand the author. establishing both her style and her tone, it functions as an accessible form in her body of work.

Set in the city of houston, texas, it features a serial killer on the loose as he wreaks havoc in a series of bloody “jack the ripper”-type murders and carnage. Using a lot of strong, graphic imagery, it leaves nothing to the imagination as it records every lurid detail of his murder spree. As a depraved killer runs amok, he also manages to capture many of the events within society at the time. Operating as a form of social commentary, it works by examining the internal details of the police department and how they deal with such a case. the murderer himself is also a most unpleasant misogynist, another detail that is also explored in depth. in short, it manages to capture a certain tone at a time when serial killers were fashionable in literature. Will they be able to catch the killer or will they strike again and where? What will it take to stop the killer and who will they attack next in his bloody killing spree? why is the killer doing this and what motivates him to perform such a horrible act?
