Joseph Hansen was one of the prolific American authors, famous for writing books based on mystery, gay & lesbian and thriller genres. He was particularly popular for writing mysteries, especially the Dave Brandstetter mystery series. Born the son of a cobbler from South Dakota, Hansen moved to a citrus farm in California in 1936. In the early 1950s, author Hansen published poetry in a magazine called The New Yorker. Over the course of the next 10 years, he became the editor of such gay magazines as Tangents and One. When he attempted to write full-length novels, he began using pseudonyms like James Calton and Rose Brock. initially, he published 5 books and a collection of short stories under these pseudonyms. It was in the year 1970 when he finally decided to use his original name to publish his novel titled Fadeout. This was the first book to feature the main character of Dave Brandstetter as an insurance investigator. Author Hansen described him as a complex, gay street hero. As the series progresses, Dave Brandstetter also grows as a character. And by the time the series reached its final novel in 1991, Dave had aged and seemed ready to retire. the author hansen received the pwa’s lifetime achievement award in 1992. he published a few more books on his writing career before he died in 2004. hansen was born on july 19, 1923 in aberdeen. He spent most of his growing up years in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as Altadena, California. Although the author Hansen wrote and published around 40 books in different types of genres, he is particularly remembered for writing the series of innovative crime novels starring Dave Brandstetter.

hansen played dave as a tough insurance investigator who was openly gay. Despite being gay, Dave embodied the no-nonsense persona of a typical die-hard classic pi protagonist. After the success of Dave Brandstetter, author Hansen developed his second Pi character called Hack Bohannon. He described Hack as a retired sheriff’s deputy, leaving the force after working for 14 long years. While working a case, Hack Bohannon disapproves of an already whitewashed homicide investigation, which becomes the reason for his decision to leave the force. after this, he goes on to run a horse farm. A book was published by the author Hansen in 1988, which consisted of 5 novels with Hack Bohannon. this was followed by a sequel book in 1993, also consisting of 5 novels. Before beginning his career as a novelist, author Hansen used to write poetry for various magazines. he even participated in singing with a music group, and also worked some part-time jobs in magazines and bookstores. Under the pseudonym Rose Brock, he wrote a couple of gothic novels. In addition to writing novels, author Hansen was also famous for writing, giving workshops, poetry, etc., and hosting a radio show in the 1960s called Homosexuality Today. He even helped lay the groundwork for the first gay pride parade in Hollywood. Hansen hated the word gay and often described himself as homosexual. one of his 1985 novels depicts a married homosexual who gains fame and then gives his wife a divorce. later, he enters into a series of relationships with other homosexuals. Author Hansen had married an artist named Jane Bancroft in the year 1943, who was a lesbian. They remained married until her death in 1994. They had a daughter. One of Hansen’s closest friends had once quoted that he had a couple of long-term male partners. The author Hansen’s death occurred on November 24, 2004, due to cardiac arrest at his home in California.

It was released in 1978 by Henry Holt and Co. The plot of this book features Dave Brandstetter and Ben Orton in the lead roles and is set in a small town called La Caleta. sees dave investigating the murder of an unpopular cop, who is ben orton. at the beginning of the book, ben orton is found dead with his head hit by a huge pot. when this news spreads in the city, people are very stunned. They always wanted the police chief to be killed, but they didn’t think anyone would do it so soon.The townspeople thought of Ben Orton as a violent and abusive man, vowing to bend the rules for his own benefit. that ben is dead, but the corruption he spread in his police force still existed and dave brandstetter finds the exact same thing when he starts investigating him. later, he learns that an activist was already arrested before his arrival. but, when he reviews the evidence against the accused, he does not find it very convincing. dave brandstetter seems certain that the young activist has been framed by someone. He tries to find the real killer by questioning people close to Ben Orton. however, the townspeople try to make things difficult for him by foiling his investigation. He seems determined to catch Ben Orton’s killer and prevent the activist from being wrongfully convicted before time runs out.

another interesting book written in the series by author hansen is titled ‘gravedigger’. It was published in 1982. The main characters represented in this book besides Dave Brandstetter include Charles Westover and Serenity Westover. charles enters the plot as a lawyer, disqualified from practicing. he goes on to claim that his teenage daughter, who had run off with his mistress, was murdered. Charles goes to the insurance company and applies for insurance. When Dave Brandstetter begins to investigate the murder, he learns that Charles himself is missing. this makes the case even more puzzling. Dave wonders if Serenity has been murdered by the same crazed guru of a strange sex cult as so many other young women who have become her victims in the past. As Dave continues to investigate, the search for him takes him amidst the latest horrors and rising tensions. Vivid backdrops of California’s expensive suburbs and snowy mountains, wild canyons and desert towns make Dave yearn for his compassion and cunning. He experiences near death while investigating, but doesn’t lose his focus on finding out what happened to Serenity Westover and her father. Critics appreciated author Hansen’s efforts to bring this intriguing novel to light and praised him. the novel was nominated for the prestigious shamus award in 1983.
