mcmanus was 7 years old when he started writing. Although the experience was enjoyable, the author stopped writing once she reached high school. mcmanus wasn’t necessarily too busy to write. rather, the process became quite difficult, so much so that the novelist discovered that she could no longer finish the books that she had started.
He earned a master’s degree in journalism only to realize he had little to no interest in the field. Mcmanus did not want to spend his life writing news. So he went into marketing and public relations, eventually holding prominent positions at places like brodeur partners and monotype.
She attributes her success as a writer to Suzanne Collins, whom she discovered while on a cross-country business trip. Mcmanus was on her way to Portland when she realized that she needed a book to read during the trip.
so he went looking and stumbled upon the hunger games. the book reignited her passion for writing. The first novel she wrote to completion was heavily inspired by Collins’ work. the dystopian manuscript already reflected poorly on the author’s abilities.
so he scrapped it as a practical novel and wrote a second manuscript. he made several improvements to his craft with the second novel. however, like the first, he had too many problems. he couldn’t be saved, though he has gone back to both novels to look for ideas and characters that have appeared in his published works.
The idea for “One of Us Is Lying,” McManus’s first published novel, came to him after hearing the theme song for Breakfast Club. she began to contemplate the film’s themes and whether they would stick, and this encouraged her to update the film’s narrative by adding a dark twist. the book got him an agent and a publishing deal.
