The main characters described by Wolfe in this novel include Laura Watson, Tess Winnett, etc. at the beginning of the book’s story, all members of a family are depicted as being killed, except for one girl. some time later, the investigators tell him that the killer has been caught and sentenced to death. for the next fifteen years, the girl believes that the murderer will be executed for her heinous crime. the girl grows up with the family that adopted her, but she develops a deep fear remembering her fateful day. she was only 5 years old at the time and could not forget what she had seen. To overcome her fears, the girl is asked to attend therapy sessions. This girl, Laura Watson, wants to find out what really happened and check if those who were killed had really been caught. But, when the real killer learns that she is alive and well, he decides to kill her too and finish off all loose ends.
The killer doesn’t want Laura Watson to remember the details of the horrible night and tell the investigating authorities. so, he plans to finish her off once and for all. But it turns out Tess Winnett has been assigned to investigate this case and make sure justice is done. Tess Winnett forms a strong bond with Laura Watson as soon as they meet. she promises him that she will catch the real killer and will put all her efforts into it. As Tess Winnett continues her investigation, she comes across important clues linking Laura Watson’s family past. And when it’s confirmed the killer is still in sight, Ella Tess goes on a hunt to track him down and make sure she gets paid for her deadly crimes. Knowing that Laura Watson is the only one who made it out alive, Tess is sure the killer will try to come after her. So, she hatches a plan to make the killer fall for her. This turns out to be another cliffhanger where Tess Winnett shows her intelligence, ruthlessness, dedication and determination.
