Living Book List – Northern Nester

save for later!

Finally, I’ve compiled a list of Living Books that reflects our family’s favorite personal stories! This list contains nearly 250 titles across a wide range of interests, and will continue to grow as we discover more great literary works and add them to our personal library. (I’m always open to recommendations!)

You are reading: List of living books

This list of living books has been the most requested post by readers, and while it’s not complete (no living book list ever is, right?), it provides the framework for more additions to come, which I plan to include. then they have received the approval of our local critics!

Other publications that may be of interest to you:

  • 4 suggestions to steer children away from literary junk food
  • morning basket: teaching several ages at once
  • what is a living book? 6 characteristics of great literature

full disclosure: many of the books I have included in this list of living books, particularly church history, reformation, and life lessons/character categories, were chosen because they are written from a Christian perspective.

However, not all of these recommendations are based on a biblical worldview (especially books that explore different cultures), and we encourage parents to do their own due diligence by building a personal library on home.

My ultimate goal with this list is to make it available as a printable download, without ads, and to include more detail with each recommendation, such as what age and/or grade would be a more suitable title for. stay tuned for that!

“one more thing is vitally important; children must have books, living books. the best is not too good for them; anything less than the best is not good enough. and if it is necessary to exercise economy, to give up everything that belongs to the soft and luxurious life before giving up the duty of providing the books, and the frequent changes of books, which are necessary for the constant stimulation of the intellectual life of the child. ” ~charlotte bricklayer
