with over 89 novels and many collections of short stories, he was at one point considered one of the most popular writers in the world.
early years and personal life
Born in 1908 in Jamestown, North Dakota, Louis L’Amour was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Emily Lamoore. One of seven children, he grew up on the vast, expansive farmland that would inspire much of his writing career throughout his adult life.
playing ‘cowboys and indians’ as a child, he came into contact with a large number of characters that served as the basis for much of his material. Hitting the road in the winter of 1923, he and his brother headed south with their parents after a financial slump, during which time they made ends meet by doing a variety of farm jobs such as skinning cattle and bailing hay.

this was where louis really got the inspiration that would really define him as a writer and help him further develop his source material. Louis began taking on a variety of jobs, such as being a boxer and a sailor, all while he traveled both domestically and internationally and saw the world.
It was during the 1930s that he moved with his parents to Oklahoma and settled down before beginning his writing career. tapping into his wealth of experience meant he was never short of material as he captured the heart of the country for generations to come.
writing career
Starting with boxing articles and poetry, Louis had little success as a fiction writer early on, as his stories weren’t getting much attention. although he was publishing sections of his work in the “wpa guide for oklahoma”, he wasn’t getting much profit from his novels.

It was only when ‘true gang life’ posted a story of his titled ‘anything for a friend’ that he started to get the recognition he was looking for. he soon began publishing stories regularly in pulp magazines as his audience began to grow.
concentrating on crime, adventure, and seafaring stories, he surprisingly didn’t publish that many Western stories, and only one before WWII. that would soon change though after the war itself. It was during the 1950s, after his service in the Army, that Louis began selling novels with a primarily Western slant.
Publishing her first novel, ‘Westward the Tide’, in 1951, her fate as a Western novelist was sealed and she finally gained the recognition she had hoped for. this was setting aside the books he wrote in 1950 under the name ‘tex burns’ with hopalong cassidy, something he denied having done despite evidence to the contrary, explaining them as ‘books for hire’ therefore not officially yours.
He would also soon catch the attention of John Wayne, when a book of his entitled “The Gift of the Cochise” was read and the rights were subsequently obtained. this quickly became a movie with robert fellows.
all of this quickly led to louis l’amour becoming one of the most respected novelists within his field, enjoying both critical and commercial success during his time.

The first novel in what would become ‘The Sacketts’ series, this book by Louis L’Amour was originally published in 1974. Set in 1699, it featured the story of the protagonist Barnabas Sackett as he relates his story, which is a narrative from a trip in which he traded several furs with the Chesapeake Indians.
He is joined on this journey by Captain Brian Tempany and his daughter Abigail, the sweet but deadly sniper, who provide assistance on the journey. Traveling from the English fens, they begin their journey with high hopes, but soon realize danger is afoot in the form of the ‘Jolly Jack’ following them on a chase, captained by none other than the infamous Captain Nick Bardle. /p>
Having been sent by Genester Heir Rupert, he orders Bardle to hunt them down, as it’s all part of a greedy plot to track them and their ship. With a group of friends crewing the raider ship, it’s up to them to band together and stop this from happening.
However, not all of them will survive, as it will be a journey with high stakes and even greater consequences as they embark on the fateful journey of what may be their last. Will they be able to outrun the enemy and reach their destination to make the trade? Will they be able to survive and who will reach the end of the journey of them all? what will become of them as they navigate the rough waters of sacckett land?
westward the tide
Originally published in 1976 on December 15, this novel by Louis L’Amour was another trip to the great country of America that often inspired much of his work. this time taking a look at the exploits of a drifter named matt bardoul, a trustworthy but dangerous man you wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of.
Single-minded, he’s a quick-witted individual with a strong-willed nature, that is until he’s confronted by the beautiful Jacquine Coyle, who is just as outspoken as he is. Setting off in search of gold, her journey takes her into the Bighorn Mountains as she accompanies her father as they both set out on their hopefully profitable expedition.
matt soon decides to join them and their group and all seems to be going well, until it becomes transparent that not all members of the group may have good intentions. With would-be thieves in their midst, Matt finds himself unable to trust them and quickly realizes that her character may leave a lot to be desired.
Putting him to the test, he soon discovers he may face his greatest challenge yet, as he learns of his nefarious plan involving lust, greed, and even murder. Will they be able to survive this potentially fateful journey, or will they succumb to the many dangers that lie ahead? Can Matt protect them and reach their final destination safely? what will become of them and will they ever find their gold?
