marguerite henry is an author of children’s books best known for her animal stories, most of which are about horses. Henry was born in 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the youngest daughter of Anna and Louis Breithaupt. her father ran and owned a publishing company and therefore she relied on the aspects of writing and reading from a very young age. however, since she grew up in the city, she never had much interaction with pets, but she still developed a fondness for the animals that she writes about in her novels. Ella Marguerite was very interested in writing and books and when she was eleven years old she had sold her first article to a magazine. she also worked at the local library where she repaired books. She published her first novel “Misty of Chincoteague” in 1947 and it became the first in the “Misty” series of novels. Since then, she has published over fifty children’s novels to become one of the most popular children’s animal story writers of all time. Although she died in 1997, her moving and moving stories continue to be widely read.
after graduating from riverside milwaukee high school, he went to milwaukee state teachers college and a few years later he attended the university of wisconsin. she at the age of 21 she married a sales manager named sidney henry crocker and from that moment she took her surname. her first big break was the few articles she wrote for the “evening post”, which were later followed by informative books and several minor children’s stories. her first full title was “auno and tauno” published in 1940. her work was inspired by the story of childhood experiences told to her by two finnish friends of hers. This was followed by several other children’s novels including “Dilly Dally Sally Her First Igloo on Baffin Island” and “Geraldine Belinda”. She also published several illustrated books such as “Australia in Stories and Images”, “Alaska in Stories and Images” and “Mexico in Stories and Images”. Her breakthrough novel was the 1945 novel “Justin Morgan Had a Horse” which won critical acclaim. The novel is set in the late 18th century and is a retelling of Morgan Horse’s story from the time the animal was sired in rural Vermont. once she was done with the story, the author searched the local library for children’s novels trying to find an illustrator. She knew she had found the right man when he found a novel called “Flip” illustrated and written by Wesley Dennis. She contacted the author and Wesley agreed to work on the illustrations, beginning a long collaboration that produced more than twenty novels.

one of henry’s most enduring and popular works was the 1947 published title misty of chincoteague which became part of his legacy series. Like many of her stories, it is based on true events, as the horse she writes about in the novel was a filly she once saw in Chincoteague during Pony Barnyard Day. Henry bought and lived with Misty the Pony for several years while writing her book. eventually, the pony was shipped back to a ranch where the buyer wanted her to breed. Once the novel was published, the pony became very popular and became something of a celebrity and even received an invitation to the American Library Association conference. she would later make a movie based on her life. When Marguerite Henry’s first foal had to be named, she asked the children for suggestions and Misty was a universal favorite. The novel Misty of Chincoteague was the winner of the 1961 Lewis Carroll Shelf Prize and the Newbery Honor Book. One thing that has made Henry one of the best children’s authors is that he combined imagination with story to create some of the most powerful and authentic plots in the genre. he spent months researching his novels while using interviews, sending letters and traveling to different places to get all the details right. For example, he wrote letters to Dana David Hewitt, a 98-year-old Virginia resident when she was researching her novel Justin Morgan She Had a Horse.

They dream of one day owning a horse known as Ghost, but the problem is that the species has never been caught in the annual hunt on Assateague Island. Tired of waiting, they decide to go to the fire chief and buy one from him. paul gets a deal from the boss to mate phantom with a newborn foal he calls misty. but when they arrive at the sale floor they find a sold sign on their horse and colt and the fire chief is categorical in stating that the purchase was definitive. but they are not willing to give up so easily and jump through many hoops and finally get their hands on phantom. is a great horse story that still delights young and old readers alike.

“Starfish: Orphan of Chincoteague,” the second novel in Marguerite Henry’s “Misty” series opens with Pony Yard Day in Chincoteague. it is set at a time just before the wild horses are hunted on the island, and is later made available to buyers. Maureen and Paul are contacted by some filmmakers who are interested in buying Misty the horse they bought the year before. they appreciate misty and it’s painful to have to let her go, although having money to send her uncle to college is also important to them. In addition, they believe that children need to live and enjoy the beauty and exhilaration of being with Misty. but once they let her go, her hearts fill with emptiness and now they need something else to enslave her wounds and fill the emptiness. Fortunately, they find an orphaned foal in Sea Stat that they make their own. However, she has a problem with her appetite that has affected her health and now Paul and Maureen need to find a solution if she wants to live.
Henry’s novel, “Misty Foal,” begins with Maureen and Paul Beebe having to leave their home on Chincoteague Island. There’s a big storm coming and they have to leave Misty, her pregnant pony, behind on the island, which is pretty hard to do. with each passing day they need to be exceptionally strong and knowing that their pony is on the island that has been severely hit by a storm doesn’t help matters. Fortunately, they return to Chincoteague to find that Misty and Stormy, their newborn foal, are fine. the theme of the novel is that things will often get better even if they seem so bad at present.
