Maureen Johnson is an American author of literature and fictional novels most famous for being the author of the Scarlett Suite series and the Shades of London series. Maureen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and attended an all-girls Catholic high school, graduating from the University of Delaware. In the brief period between her graduate and undergraduate careers, Maureen worked in New York City and Philadelphia, London. She was also a manager of the Philadelphia Theater Company, a bartender at Piccadilly, a secretary, a waitress at a theme restaurant, and a seasonal entertainer. She studied theater playwriting and writing at Columbia University, where she graduated with a master’s degree in writing.
Maureen Johnson’s first novel, The Key to the Golden Firebird, was published in 2004. Maureen’s book, The Bermudez Triangle, was challenged by a parent of a student in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. the author responded on her blog calling for transparency in the process of challenging the school system. to address this controversy, the school board did not remove the book from the library, but instead placed it in a restricted portion of the high school library. em. 13 Little Blue Packets is the first book in the Little Blue Packets series by Maureen Johnson. is a modern coming of age tale that centers on virginia blackstone, aka ginny, a 17-year-old girl who receives a letter in a blue envelope from her beloved aunt. she’s going to fly to london, but she can’t use crutches. The envelope contains money ($1,000) in cash and the instruction to collect several packs of letters that start Ginny on a journey through Europe following in the footsteps of her flamboyant aunt. The instructions are pretty specific, no maps, no cell phones, and Ginny can only open one envelope at a time after the previous letter’s task has been completed.

Through these letters, Ginny learns more about what drove her aunt to flee Europe in search of her art. he also finds out about his aunt’s last year of life, as she had already died of a brain tumor when the first letter arrived. Through Ginny’s adventures, she learns more about herself, her own wits, strength and her abilities to forgive and also discovers that she can be an exciting person too.
Some of the tasks you must complete seem impossible to you, like finding a restaurant in Paris where your aunt spent about a month decorating the restaurant to pay the rent and sleeping behind the bar. Other tasks are easier to solve, and as a reader, you’ll laugh at some of Ginny’s problems and cringe at her mistakes as the envelopes take her on a journey across Europe.
Filled with a strong supporting cast (including the annoying family of Americans with plans in Amsterdam and the beautiful playwright she meets in London) the story unfolds at a steady pace, never losing its evocative nature as Ginny returns. in the footsteps of his beloved aunt.
the last little blue envelope
As the first book in Little Blue Envelopes concludes, Ginny’s bag containing the last of her aunt’s letter is stolen before she can read the letter. although she manages to decipher her aunt’s final message to her, she still wishes she had read the letter herself. letter several months old, ginny is contacted by a man who claims to have had her letter and wants to meet her in england. Oliver the Man, claiming to have the letter instead of handling it over Ginny’s property, proceeds to blackmail her. he informs her how much she made her aunt’s painting at auction and states that he wants a piece of it. Oliver is cruel, selfish, and denies Ginny seeing the letter.
the second book in blue envelopes is brilliant and what makes this novel unique is its travel aspect. the great journeys through europe seen through ginny’s eyes are amazing. the addition of characters in this second novel is very well done with each multidimensional character. Overall, the second series installment novel is simple but also entertaining, and like all of Maureen Johnson’s novels, the writing is very well done, the dialogue is witty, and the characters are likable.

the name of the star introduces us to rory, a southern girl who goes to london. she’s having a good time at school in london, making new friends and learning to fit in and then all of a sudden she starts seeing things no one else can.
then she also sees a man her roommate didn’t see and murders start happening in london. could this be the work of a serial killer? Can the cops stop the next murders since they know the place and time they will happen? what can be gleaned from the surveillance footage that does not show the attacker?
Rory soon discovers that what she actually saw was never normal, and subsequently finds herself drawn into a world of paranormal investigations and secret police. The Name of the Star is a story filled with laugh-out-loud moments, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and quotable catchphrases. The plot is multi-layered and well-woven, and it’s clear that the author did a lot of research before writing this novel. the historical facts were really accurate and interesting, and the description of the places is also detailed. Maureen Johnson alternates between casual and informal, first and third person, which makes the story engaging and easy to understand. the main character is rory; her humor is fresh, witty and the kind of person she aspires to be. she is brave, kind and shows all the characters that she is human. she’s also relatable, loyal, trustworthy, and a genuinely charming person. In addition, all the characters are also interesting, each with a different personality and with their own secrets.
