perry mason is a popular character in the series of books written by erle stanley gardner. Perry Mason is the fictional lawyer who enjoys solving very difficult cases that are hopeless and sometimes even funds the case as well. erle stanley gardner himself has written in one of his books that he named his character in honor of the publisher that published his first book, since he was a great admirer of the champion of youth published by perry mason and company. The popular series was later adapted into a popular TV series of the same name and soon one of the titles, The Case of the Velvet Claws, was also made into a Hollywood movie. many other popular titles in the series were also made into films. Perry Mason’s popularity skyrocketed so much that Warner Bros. made 6 movies based on the titles. The Perry Mason series was so popular that it even became a radio show which also became very popular and ran for 3,200 episodes. The popular Indian detective series Adaalat and The Lawyer Vinod are believed to have been inspired by the Perry Mason series.

interestingly, the series came with some strong supporting characters, like della street, who was perry mason’s secretary and supported all his investigations and cases. Paul Drake was the private investigator who helped Perry Mason conduct her unusual and difficult case investigations. These 2 minor characters appear in the first book of the Perry Mason series, which is the Velvet Claws case published in 1933. Gardner introduces Hamilton Burger, who is the District Attorney, in one of the later novels.

since the author himself, erle stanley gardner, studied law, his stories were more or less infallible and, at first, his character even went to great lengths to prove his client’s innocence. Although initially, Perry Mason took some unethical ways to save the clients from him, then he adjusted only to ethical ways and played more with the investigation part. The forms of it were so popular that as many as 80 titles were released under the Perry Mason series. The 10-year-long Perry Mason TV series also became a huge rage between 2 generations. There were also many TV movies made based on the popular series which also became quite admired. In fact, the series became the springboard for many admired actors including Burt Reynolds, Barbara Eden, Adam West, Robert Redford, Dick Clark, Angie Dickinson, James Coburn, Leonard Nimoy, Chloris Leachman and Ryan O’Neal. Another long run was that Raymond Burr has played the title character in 26 of the 30 weird TV movies based on the Perry Mason series. Burr played the role of Perry Mason throughout the television series for 10 years.
To keep reality in check, Series 3 Perry Mason fails the case. The Case of the Dumb Witness is one of those titles where Perry Mason loses the non-murder case. her client is found guilty in the case of the terrified typist, though he manages to save her from the clutches of the law. but in the case of the deadly verdict, his client is found guilty and sentenced to death.

an account of a couple of perry mason titles
To give you an idea of the character and the series, let’s briefly look at a couple of the books in the series so you understand what it’s all about. the first title I have chosen in the case of the moth-eaten mink. This was published in 1952. The story revolves around a restaurant waitress who leaves her moth-eaten mink coat in shock. the restaurant owner blames that the police are looking for her and therefore people chase her creating the commotion. Della and Mason are at the crime scene when it happens and Della smartly grabs the coat. a couple more murders occur at the hotel later, finally bringing up the murder of a cop that happened a year ago. Paul Drake is called in to investigate and the restaurant’s manager, Morris Alburg, also appears to be involved in the plot. a couple of turns and mason has to stand on the witness stand in court. Finally, Mason finds the real culprit (obviously!).
The Case of the Howling Dog is the fourth book published in the Perry Masons series. the book begins with the client who wants to make a case against his neighbor whose dog howls and annoys him. Although Mason tries to avoid the trivial case, the client insists and Mason finally visits his client’s house to see what the problem was. Mason is convinced of the howling problem, as he finds it quite annoying himself. the client’s neighbor rejects him immediately and blames his client that he is crazy. But Mason is surprised when his client makes a will giving all his wealth to this neighbor’s wife. then the neighbor and the dog are shot to death and the will appears to be in the name of the neighbor’s real wife and not the lady who lives with him. Perry Mason gets the clues just before the police can. the inevitable court scenes are introduced in this series under this title. read the book to find out what really happens!
While current generations may find it difficult to accept the ways of the Perry Mason series easily, considering the time the books were released, they were quite captivating. That is the main reason why the Perry Mason series became a huge success in all media: print, radio, television and film. The last book in Erle Stanley Gardner’s series, The Case of the Fabulous Hoax, was published in 1969. The Case of the Fenced Woman and The Case of the Delayed Murder were published posthumously in 1972 and 1973. Much later, during 1989-90 Thomas Chastain wrote 2 Perry Mason stories under the license that was based on characters created by Gardner. They were named Perry Mason in the Too Many Murders case and Perry Mason in the Burning Legacy case.
