full access loan

Full access cardholders can borrow up to 50 physical items at a time on their library card and up to 20 downloadable titles (overdrive and libby combined). To obtain a BPL Full Access Library Card, apply online and then show acceptable identification at any of our BPL locations.

renewal materials

You can renew materials as long as there are no holds on the item and your account is in good standing. there is a maximum of 15 renewals for each item.

There are several ways to renew books and materials:

  • in person at an open bpl location
  • online by logging into my account
  • using the bpl app
  • by text message , if you are subscribed to text message notifications
  • by phone by calling 718.230.6700
place reservations

put an item on hold to request materials not available at your local library. learn more.

  • make a hold request through our catalog or in person at your local library
  • you may make up to 15 holds of any circulating item with the exception of references, special collections, and magazines and daily you can place up to 10 downloadable title reservations at a time.
  • You will be notified by email, text or phone when your reservation is ready for pickup. make sure we have your correct contact information. You will have 7 days to collect your reservation.

return of materials
  • return the material to any open brooklyn public library location. after-hours book deliveries are available at many locations.
  • all materials must be returned by the due date at checkout or renewal. items that are not returned more than 28 days after their due date are considered lost. a replacement charge for the cost of lost items will be added to your account to replace them in our collection.
  • multi-piece materials must be returned complete at time of return to avoid replacement charges.
  • Complimentary reminders of upcoming due dates are sent via email or text message. expiration notices are sent by email, text or phone. failure to receive notices does not justify replacement charges.
interlibrary loan

interlibrary loan is a service that allows holders of valid brooklyn public library cards to borrow non-bpl owned books from other libraries in the united states. this service is free to users of the brooklyn public library; however, fines and fees charged by the lending library apply. learn more.

types of special cards

welcome card

Coming September 2022! Online applicants for a bpl library card can be immediately awarded a welcome card, no ID required, with instant access to our digital collection, databases, computers and printing, plus loan limited physical (maximum 3 retentions, maximum 3 departures) . Welcome cards expire after one year, with an option to renew, and can be upgraded at any time to a full access card by visiting a BPL branch with ID.

educator card

Teachers, administrators, librarians, and child care providers currently employed in a public and private school, licensed child care center, special education or after-school program, as well as homeschooling parents and guardians are eligible to apply for an educator card. learn more.

Cardholders who have borrowed more than 2,500 items from bpl are invited to join our advanced user program. learn more.

books not banned initiative

teenagers and young adults ages 13-21 outside of new york state can apply for a free e-card for non-prohibited books. This card provides access to BPL’s entire digital collection and helps connect young people facing censorship and book bans in their communities with materials that explore a broader range of topics. You can support the Books Not Banned Initiative by making a donation.

card from another state

As of July 15, 2022, the Brooklyn Public Library will no longer offer your out-of-state library card based on a fee. Our priority continues to be serving Brooklynites and ensure they can access the materials they need at the right time. BPL library cards remain free to anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes, or attends school in New York State. existing out-of-state accounts will remain active until their expiration date and will not be renewable.
