Where to Start with Robin Hobb: A Reading Guide – Northern Bibliophile

one of the most frequently asked questions i get on instagram is where to start with robin hobb. with a series of 16 books, this is not surprising! It also doesn’t help that Hobb names all of his books similarly – how many killers and fools can one title have? but we forgive her, of course.

A 16-book series can seem overwhelming at first, but once you meet Fitz, Nighteyes, and the Fool, you’ll never look back. i also mentioned in this post that it was shocking not to have made a post about robin hobb yet despite having a blog for months. I’m fixing this now!

You are reading: Robin hobb books in order

The lovely folks at hobb squad helped me know where to start with robin hobb, with your reading above! We spent almost two years reading these books together, and I think it’s the only time I’ve committed to such a long read. but it was worth it, definitely recommend having a friend when you start reading hobb. You’ll need someone to discuss theories with, cry with, and generally vent about what an idiot fitz is. you’ll have a great time.

I strongly recommend that you follow the order I read with hobb squad. I have seen some people express doubts about reading the wild chronicles of the rain. While I agree they’re not as strong as the other hobb books, they’re worth picking up just for the added character development. also dragons and daring.

1. clairvoyant trilogy

Assassin’s Apprentice #1
#2 royal assassin
the hunt for killer #3

Your journey with Hobb begins here with the Assassin’s Apprentice. don’t worry if he finds the first book a bit slow. hobb is the queen of slow burn. You can’t start a 16-book epic fantasy series without first laying a solid foundation!

2. Living Ship Traders Trilogy

#1 magic ship
#2 the crazy ship
#3 ship of destiny

this is my favorite hobb trilogy, and possibly anyone, ever. For me it is on another level. the women in this book are some of my favorites in fiction, and their character development is second to none.

3. the reddish man trilogy

fool’s homework #1
#2 golden fool
#3 the fool’s fate

I was going to give a brief summary of each trilogy as it went along, but now I realize that would be a terrible idea… it’s incredibly difficult to talk about this entire series as it goes along without spoiling anything! so I’ll just say that if you loved the wit magic in the first trilogy, you’ll love this.

4. the wild rain chronicles

#1 Dragon Guardian
#2 dragon haven
#3 city of dragons
#4 blood of dragons

the only ones that don’t belong to the trilogy of the series, but these books are not as thick as the others. As I mentioned before, they are not as strong as the other books, but they are worth reading. hobb is a master at intertwining characters and plots, and you won’t want to miss this one!

5. the fitz and the fool trilogy

fool slayer #1
#2 search for fools
the fate of assassin #3

That’s it, it all comes to an end with this trilogy. you will cry you’ll immediately want to go back to the beginning and experience this journey all over again.
