First, it was Henry II’s closest confidant, Thomas Becket, who is assassinated. this betrayal went all the way and ended with the assassination of the king. the novel’s plot shows that there were enough scandals, intrigues, seductions, and betrayals during medieval times to bring down any kingdom during that time. Critics and readers praised author Sharon Kay Penman for her recreation of the medieval period. she has depicted the royal couple’s love for each other as well as for the power of the kingdom in a very interesting way.
