the author stewart o’nan was born in pittsburgh, pennsylvania on february 4, 1961 and also grew up in pittsburgh. he earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from boston university in 1983, and during his time here, he became a fan of the boston red sox. He worked from 1984 to 1988 as a test engineer at Grumman Aerospace Corporation. He married Trudy Anne Southwick, his high school sweetheart, on October 27, 1984.
Trudy encouraged Stewart to try to become a writer, and they moved to Ithaca, New York, and O’nan went back to college, earning an MFA from Cornell University in 1992.
stewart writes literary fiction and horror. his first novel, “Snow Angels” was published in 1994.

“wish you were here” is the first novel in the “maxwell family” series, which was published in 2002. one year after the persistent death of henry maxwell (patriarch of the family), emily (his tyrannical widow ) invites his scattered family to spend one last vacation together at his summer house on Chautauqua Lake. It is a place that Emily has decided to sell after the family has owned it for decades.

“emily, alone” is the second novel in the “maxwell family” series, which was published in 2011. emily maxwell’s children moved away a long time ago. She imagines visits from her grandchildren as she mourns the loss of her idyllic Pittsburgh neighborhood. meanwhile, arlene (her sister-in-law and only partner of hers) passes out at the couple’s favorite breakfast buffet, disrupting emily’s days.
While struggling with a newfound independence, she finds a hidden strength and discovers that life will always offer her new possibilities. Like many older women, Emily is an unseen but familiar figure, rarely portrayed so honestly. her mixed feelings, those of joy, regret, pride and sadness, are gracefully expressed in totally unexpected ways.
“henry, himself” is the third novel in the “maxwell family” series, which was released in the year 2019. henry maxwell (lover, son, parishioner, breadwinner and soldier) has spent his entire life trying to live life with honor. Born in the city of pittsburgh and an engineer, he has always believed in things like logic, hard work and sacrifice. he is now retired and seventy-five years old, he feels that the world has passed him by. the year is 1998, the American century is ending, and nothing is simple anymore. his children are distant and his unhappiness is a mystery. only his dog his rufus and his wife emily support him.
Once a confident man, though Henry’s memory and strength have deserted him, he weighs his regrets against his dreams and has questions he can’t answer. Has he done good for those he loves? Is he really a good man? With little time, what can he really expect, realistically?

“Snow Angels” is the first independent novel, which was published in the year 1994. western pennsylvania in the year 1974. during a snowy winter afternoon, during the winter the parents of arthur parkinson separated, the practice of Arthur’s high school band gets interrupted by the sound of gunshots. it’s too close to be a deer hunt, and it ends up being the sound of annie marchand’s murder.
annie used to be arthur’s babysitter and the person he looked up to during his childhood. She was a young woman for whom life didn’t turn out so well, she wouldn’t find anyone to blame and she couldn’t keep herself or her loved ones out of harm’s way.
The story weaves together a couple of disturbing tales. Arthur’s account of how his family fell apart and how it all went wrong the year he turned fifteen. the story of annie marchand and the life he could never put back together
This is a hauntingly beautiful story, one of pain and loss, as well as how it feels to be a boy about to become a man, experiencing the first great losses. stewart masterfully uses the western pennsylvania setting to evoke the right feelings of grief, desolation, and loss. the book is a calm and powerful read.
“The Names of the Dead” is the second stand-alone novel, which was published in 1996. Nearly fifteen years after his tour of duty in Vietnam as an Army medic ended, 34-year-old Larry Markham is still being haunted by the grim nightmares of his combat experiences. trapped in a dead end job where he delivers wonderful bread and estranged from his sick father. In addition to this, he has recently been abandoned by his young son and his long-suffering wife. The only human contact he has is leading a support group for Vietnamese disabled veterans.
Larry struggles to resolve haunting memories of the war. To make matters worse, a disturbed member of the support group, who is an ex-CIA assassin with some enigmatic scores to settle, disappears from the hospital. he begins to stalk larry and his divided family.
For some, this book is one of the best books they have ever read. the book is heartbreaking and charming, full of humor and sympathy. stewart shows with the book how talented he is and how well he can write a novel. the prose is deadly, tight and simple, and the story is captivating.
