tessa afshar is an award-winning American author of biblical and historical fiction who has made a name for herself in the Christian genre. Ella Tessa was born in Iran and she spent most of her childhood there, before moving to England at age fourteen. In England, she went to boarding school, which is where she was introduced and she fell in love with people like Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen. she converted to Christianity when she was twenty years old, which had a profound effect on her life. she emigrated to the united states where she went to college at yale, graduating with an mdiv. In addition to taking a theology course at Yale, she was co-president of the Christian fraternity’s school of theology. The novel is set in 5th century Persia and follows the life and times of Sarah, the cousin of the prophet Nehemiah. Sarah seeks to gain her father’s approval and attention, and thus she secretly learns to write and read, something women in her society were not allowed to do. When her cousin finds out that she has been secretly studying, he encourages her and it is not long before she Sarah is a talented scribe with knowledge of several languages of the kingdom. the queen of persia learns of her gift and invites her to court to become her scribe. Just when she is accomplishing what she never thought she could accomplish, she uncovers a plot against the king’s mother and reports it to the queen. She thought she was doing a good thing, but now she faces the prospect of marrying Darius, a wealthy Persian aristocrat as a reward for her information.
