War ration books were produced by the United States Bureau of Price Administration in 1942 when the United States officially entered World War II. Shortages of essential war materials such as rubber, gasoline, and sugar were initially anticipated, but soon rationing increased to include food, fuel, and sugar. Most staples were removed from rationing in late 1945. The exception was sugar, which continued to be rationed until 1947. See the Timeline of Rationing available at Duke University Digital Collections. Additional ration books are available at Duke University’s Rare Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library.
