diana wynne jones was an author who was born in london, england, in 1934. she was born to richard aneurin and marjorie jones, both of whom were teachers by profession. She lived in London until war was declared in 1939, where she and her family fled to Wales. Her childhood was quite chaotic and she was negatively affected by the war as her family couldn’t stay in one place for long. She spent brief spells in York, Coniston Water and even London, always on the move. they eventually settled in a place called thaxted, essex in 1943.
His parents started working at an educational conference center in essex once they settled there. while her parents worked, jones and her two sisters, the well-known literary critic isobel armstrong and the actress and writer ursula jones, were left alone. They were left without much reading material by her father, who was described as someone who could “beat Scrooge in a pettiness contest”. even at a young age, she had a vivid imagination suitable for a writing career that she channeled into creating stories for herself to make up for the lack of books she had to read. however, her desire to be a writer was never supported by her parents, who simply laughed at her because she was extremely dyslexic.
he attended friends school, an independent quaker school in saffron walden, essex. after finishing school there, she attended st anne’s college in oxford, where she studied english. she there she was able to attend the conferences of famous writers like c. yes Lewis, author of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and J. r. r. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings series, which further inspired her love of language and writing.

When she graduated from college in 1956, she married a man named John Burrow that same year. she worked as a scholar of medieval literature. Together they had three sons named Richard, Michael and Colin and lived together in London until they returned to Oxford in 1957. When her youngest child was two years old in the mid-1960s, Jones decided to start writing. she claimed that she was “mainly to keep (her) sanity” from her while she was raising the children, dealing with her sick husband and being encapsulated in other assorted crises in her home.

His first book, changeover, is about a fictional African country that goes from functioning as a colony to being an independent country. the story is a great mass of characters from all walks of life in the conflict: government bureaucracies, the police and the military. deals with topics related to sex, politics and news. It was aimed at an adult audience and was published by Macmillan in 1970, a time when many colonies had seceded under the rule of the British Empire.
His books ranged widely in genre, from slapstick situational comedy to critical social and political commentary. His children’s books were often compared to the later Harry Potter series by beloved author JK Is Rowling. Even when some of Jone’s books were out of print, the popularity of the Harry Potter series brought them back into popularity. One of his most famous books was probably Howl’s Moving Castle. the story took shape after a boy, whose name she had forgotten, at a school he was visiting, asked her to write a book about a moving castle. It was published in 1986 by Greenwillow Books of New York in the United States. It was a finalist for the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and in 2005 won the Phoenix Award after the feature film was released.

Howl’s Moving Castle was probably most famous as the Japanese-language feature film it was adapted into by Hayo Miyazaki, famed Studio Ghibli director. The film was released in 2004 and broke box office records in Japan when it was released. it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and was subsequently dubbed into English and several other European languages.
The book tells the story of a young woman named Sophie Hatter who lives in the fictional town of Market Chipping in the magical kingdom of Ingary. She becomes acquainted with a wizard named Howl and together they go on incredible and twisted adventures until they finally settle down as husband and wife. the book became part of a series and subsequent books titled castle in the air and house of many ways were published in 1990 and 2008 respectively, as it really happened.
has been the winner of many prestigious awards in its time. these include the Guardian Award in 1978; the mythopoetic prize in 1996 and in 1999; and the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. She was also a nominee and finalist for countless awards. She was a finalist for the Children’s Book Award in 1981 and was a finalist for the prestigious Carnegie Medal twice. she alone in 1999 she won two major fantasy awards, the awards were as follows; the children’s mythopoetic prize in the united states as well as the karl edward wagner prize in the united kingdom. the latter is only awarded to authors believed to have had a major cultural impact on fantasy fiction writing.
In the early summer of 2009, Jones was diagnosed with lung cancer. he was able to undergo the necessary surgery that summer and believed he was successful. however, in 2010 she accepted that the harsh chemotherapy she had to undergo was making her too sick to continue. she died on March 26, 2011, leaving behind her husband, three children, five grandchildren, and a legacy of hers in her published novels that will endure for generations. Although Diana Jones may no longer be with us, her novels have created a cultural impact. that will remain with the fantasy genre for decades to come.
