This is a personal recommendation and the one used frequently in most universities. anatomy is learned through the visualization of body structures. Therefore, being an atlas, Netter’s book is best for learning anatomy in medical school.
The best-selling and most popular, contains hundreds of illustrations of the human anatomy, from the smallest blood vessel and nerve to the largest organ. Nearly all of the illustrations were painted by the late great American surgeon: Frank H. netter. Although they are hand-painted, it is quite incredible that these drawings are accurate and true-to-life representations of what the human anatomy actually looks like.
all were painted in great detail and his work has been compiled since 1989. It is currently in print in its eighth edition and has been teaching anatomy to millions of medical students around the world.

thieme anatomy atlas by gilroy
Thieme’s Anatomy Atlas, another student favorite, is also one of the best atlases for medical students. like netter, it has hundreds of detailed illustrations, but what makes it different is that they are complemented with tables and boxes rich in a variety of clinically relevant information.
if you have had trouble memorizing the origin, insertion, nerve innervation and action of the muscle or the so-called oina while becoming familiar with the structures, the atlas of thieme of anatomy is your game. it also provides additional techniques on how to easily remember some sections.

anatomy: a photographic atlas of rohen
while the first two books were made with finely detailed artistic illustrations, rohen’s anatomy atlas is created with a compilation of actual photos of dissected cadavers. some students find it easier to study real photographs than handwritten illustrations. what you see in real life is what you get on paper as images are printed in high resolution.
However, since it’s a corpse image, what it costs you in real life can also be a struggle on paper. it can be quite difficult to differentiate fine and subtle structures. still, the structures have been appropriately and colorfully labeled to help you easily identify them.
The book is now in its eighth edition. Although quite a bit more expensive than the other atlases, it’s definitely worth it if you’re looking for high resolution photos of real cadaver structures.

clinical anatomy: applied anatomy for students and young doctors
The organization of this book is different from that of regular anatomical atlases. is grouped into regions for ease of reference: head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and upper and lower extremities. is in its 14th edition with special emphasis on the nervous system. Suitable for both surgical and non-surgical medical students, this book is generally recommended for those who already have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology. You could use this as a adjunct to clinical papers and exams as the book also contains clinical case scenarios.
In addition to the atlas of body structures, the book also provides radiological images such as x-rays and CT scans for a better understanding of what they look like for diagnostic purposes. it also provides an access code to a website where learning is extended through flashcards and more images. if you intend to take the royal college of surgeons exams, this book is a recommendation as it is designed accordingly.

guyton and hall textbook of medical physiology
There is no other reason why this is the #1 medical physiology book than the fact that it is the gold standard since its first release in 1956. Its almost 1,200 pages are packed with detailed and in-depth discussions of different cellular and even biomolecular processes involved in human physiology.
There are 15 sections subdivided into 8 chapters. Although the book is largely textual, it also contains high-resolution color images, figures, and tables. Purchasing the book will also give you access to its electronic version, additional resources of free video animations, and an online resource called student reference that contains multiple choice questions from each section of the book.
This is the medical physiology book I used in my freshman year. although long, it has a comprehensive and timeless discussion of medical physiology, especially cardio. definitely a personal recommendation and one of the best anatomy and physiology books for medical students.

another bible in medical physiology, boron & boulpaep provides an in-depth and well-detailed discussion as does guyton. In addition to the texts, it complements them with various graphs and figures. addresses physiology from the cellular level to how all the processes could be juxtaposed to be applied in clinical practice.
contains 10 sections covering an organ system. each section is subdivided into several chapters. it has a total of 62 chapters with more than 1300 pages.

costanzo physiology
If you are looking for a comprehensive medical physiology review book, Costanzo’s is what you need. it is one of the most detailed review books you could use for exams. complete but concise, Linda Costanzo’s masterpiece has 10 chapters subdivided into subtopics. each chapter addresses a specific organ system. It also includes helpful diagrams and tables, clinical laboratory cases, and sample questions at the end of each chapter to test your understanding of it.
Since this is just a review book, all of these are compressed into 500 pages so it won’t be overwhelming for students. this is an ideal option for those looking for a comprehensive review book but one that makes each concept simpler and easier to understand.

Another Medical Physiology Review, Ganong’s Medical Physiology Review has 8 sections, each discussing a body system. each chapter is subdivided into multiple subchapters that comprise a total of nearly 800 pages. It’s quite a bit longer than your average paperback review book, but it also contains useful diagrams, tables, and figures for supplemental learning. also includes clinical charts that highlight clinical importance, a summary at the end of each chapter, and multiple-choice questions.

bern & rate physiology
This book has 8 sections with 44 chapters with a total of 867 pages. each chapter takes an in-depth look at one organ system. the text is complemented by numerous graphs, tables and diagrams. The book includes “at the clinical level” and “at the cellular level” text boxes that highlight the clinical relevance and the actual cellular process involved, respectively.
At the end of each chapter, there is a summary of key concepts to facilitate memorization. Like Guyton, it comes with a Student Reference that gives you full access to the book online and a compilation of USMLE-style review questions.

Another Linda Costanzo masterpiece, The Physiology of Brs is also an extensive review book in preparation for her exams. If you are looking for the most concise review resource, this is the one for you. it’s just made of over 300 pages. It may be shorter than any review book mentioned here, but consider that it is packed with simple, essential information on medical physiology. this is your helpful but high performance physiology review.

The structure is neat with clear headings and subheadings. studying will be much easier since the key concepts in the text are already highlighted. there are also diagrams and tables for a better understanding. It is in its seventh edition and I could say that this is also one of my personal recommendations.
