1. the crown game by evelyn skye

if you are looking for books similar to the selection, then the game of crown could be a very good book to choose. this book has more fantasy elements, but it feels very similar in some of its themes, in the competitive aspect of the novel, and in its writing style.

vika andreyeva and nikolai karimov are two charming young men in russia. the only problem? there can only be one enchanter! if there is more than one, then the magic of the land is divided… and this cannot happen since the imperial enchanter will need to draw on all the magic of the land to protect the tsar and the Russian people.

so what do you do when there are too many enchanters? Fortunately, there is already a policy: start the game of the crown. Unfortunately, this game ends with the victor becoming an adviser to the Tsar… and ends with the death of the defeated enchanter!

vika and nikolai have perfected their magical powers and have trained all their lives for this. But when the Tsar initiates the game of the crown and they come face to face for the first time, Nikolai soon falls in love with his fierce opponent while Vika is drawn to Nikolai’s magic. But when Pasha, heir to the throne and Nikolai’s best friend, falls in love with Vika without knowing who he is, things get even more complicated! Will Nikolai be able to defeat the girl they both love? Will vika be able to kill another enchanter to win the game?

This book sounds dramatic, and it definitely is, but it’s also a really fun book to read. The magic is enchanting, the scenery in Russia is so spectacular, and there’s a sense of fantasy throughout that makes this light-hearted even when it touches on darker themes. just like the selection, the romance elements are sweet as the characters grow to learn more about each other. And there’s a love triangle, of course! actually, multiple love triangles. or squares? But if you’re looking for a book like the selection to enjoy, get yourself a copy of The Crown Game and start reading now!

2. victoria aveyard red queen

when wondering what to read after the selection series, the red queen could be a great book to choose from. It has a fun premise that sets up a world of division plus the main character is a commoner brought into a world of royalty, just like the selection, making it a favorite read for many fans of the selection!

In the world of the red queen, people are divided by the color of their blood: red or silver. those with red blood are commoners, while those with silver are the ruling elite who are born with special abilities (such as being able to control the weather, manipulate metal, or heal others with a touch).

Mare is a red girl from a poor family who lives on stilts, until one day she is called to work in the silver palace. but an accident in the palace makes her discover that she, despite her red blood, she possesses a power like that of the silver ones! with her powers exposed to a large group of silvers, the king and queen declare that she is a long-lost silver princess rather than admit that a red has the power of a silver. now, mare must live like a princess in the palace and not betray her hatred towards everyone with silver blood…

But when the Red Guard, a resistance group, contacts Mare and asks her to help take down the Silver Regime, she agrees and enters a dangerous world of lies and betrayal. Will mare be able to help the red guard? will any of the silver princes join her and help her in the fight to end the imbalance of power? Or will it all end in tragedy for Mare and her loved ones?

I first picked up this book because the premise sounds amazing (special powers? yes please!). but I debated whether to put it on this list as I enjoyed the first book but as the series progressed I didn’t like the direction the other books took so much. If you plan on reading these, know that in many places this is darker and more adult than the selection series. there’s a lot of unhappiness, betrayal, and heartbreak that goes unresolved and it’s way past my personal tolerance threshold for stuff like this! That said, I know a lot of fans of the selection who love these books… so my recommendation is that you give it a try, and if you like it, then you have a whole series of fun books to read!

3. turn dawn by elizabeth lim

If you’re looking for books similar to those in the selection, spin the dawn should definitely be on your radar. this book is an amazing fantasy with a strong female lead, a beautiful love story and even many beautiful dresses (I never say no to a beautiful dress 😉)!

maia tamarin has always dreamed of being the best tailor on earth. the only problem? she is a girl, and girls cannot be master tailors. But when a messenger summons her sick father to court to be the next royal tailor, Maia decides to disguise herself as a boy and compete in her place to become the emperor’s next tailor.

Through a competition filled with treacherous tailors and liars, Maia fights for herself and her family and soon comes to learn more about herself than she ever expected. But when the court mage, Edan, seems to see through her childish disguise, will all be lost?

Then, as a final test of her skill, Maia is challenged to sew three impossible magical dresses. Will she be able to create these dresses sewn with the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon and the blood of the stars? Or will she die trying?

With spin the dawn, one of the most magical aspects of the book is the rich folklore and mix of cultures. You get a very solid sense of the world Maia lives in, even though it’s a fantasy world. Although there are bits of the story that are reminiscent of other books and fairy tales (such as the Mulan aspect of Maia disguising herself as a boy and taking her father’s place), in the end this is a vibrant book that creates something entirely new and delightful to read. !

spin the dawn offers some of the competitive aspects of the draft, though this doesn’t end up being a big focus of the book. but it has a female lead you’ll love, descriptions of pretty clothes you’ll swoon over, sweet romance, and substance that makes this a terrific read. if you liked the selection, then there’s a good chance you’ll love this book too!

4. the hunger games by suzanne collins

If you’ve been reading in the world of you for some time, chances are you’ve already read The Hunger Games. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? but this book is included in this list of books as the selection for several reasons, most notably the dystopian and game show aspects of the novel.

The Hunger Games is set in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, in which a glamorous capitol is surrounded by twelve outlying districts that get progressively poorer as you progress. each year, each of the districts sends a boy and a girl to the hunger games where they will fight to the death with the representatives of the other districts on live television.

Katniss Everdeen is a girl from District 12 and one year she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games. Will she be able to win and stay alive to return to her family? and if she wins, will she lose her humanity in the process?

this bestseller is similar to the selection with the competition in the television aspect, although the hunger games show a more stark reality than the ostentatious one of the novel of cass. Both novels are also set in a post-apocalyptic North America, and of course both have the ever-present love triangles! while the hunger games premise and story are much grittier, it’s still an exciting read and is similar enough that any fan of the selection should definitely add this one to their lists.

5. amy ewing’s jewel

When you’re looking for a book like the selection, you might as well consider reading the gem. this book has many similarities to the national team, from class divisions to the glittering facades of royalty, and many national team fans love this series!

Violet is a girl from the swamp, one of the city’s slums, and has been raised to be a surrogate mother for royalty. Now that she is old enough, it is time for her to go to the jewel where she will be placed with a rich family who will buy her as a surrogate mother at auction.

while the jewel for most means wealth and opulence, violet quickly learns about the cruelty and violence in the way of life of the rich here in the jewel. and she soon begins to wonder what happens to the surrogates and where do they all disappear to…and what can she do to avoid her fate?

This story has all the opulence and glittering wealth you could wish for, and the surrogate mothers are treated like pampered pets from time to time (although they are also often abused in one form or another). this is a smooth and light story despite the gloomy sounding theme and of course there is a forbidden romance! Because what would a book be without a forbidden romance?

On the surface, this book sounds a bit like the Handmaid’s Tale, but for young adults. however, if you go into this book with that in mind, you will be disappointed! it’s much more shallow than deep, and I think there are some pretty big plot holes that are never explained (like, why can’t rich people have babies anymore?). wasn’t my favorite overall, but if you’re looking for a light, perfunctory read to keep you entertained for a few hours, then this book is so close to the pick that you may end up enjoying it! /p>

6. kiera cass’s fiancee

The last book on this list is one I haven’t had a chance to read yet, so I can’t really recommend it one way or the other, but it’s kiera cass and it sounds pretty similar to the selection! the betrothed is by keira cass and it has a real vibe to it and sounds like it has some kind of love triangle so maybe it’s like the selection but with different characters. here is hope!
