cj box is an american best-selling writer, author of seventeen novels and best known for his series of books, the “joe pickett” series. born and raised in wyoming, c.j. box lives with his wife laurie and his three daughters, becky, roxanne and laurie, outside of cheyenne. Distinguished by his relentless writing style, gripping, action-packed stories, and his trademark cowboy image, Box is an outdoorsman and rodeo enthusiast.
He has served as one of the board members of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. During breaks from his writing, Box is a fisherman, hunter, skier, and hiker, excelling in both his literary and extraliterary pursuits. His novels have sold over 3 million copies in the United States and have been translated into 27 languages, including German, French, Japanese, Portuguese, to name a few.
personal life
box was born and raised in casper, the oldest of his three brothers. he belongs to a clan of third generation Wyomites. Being exposed to a world of letters at an early age, with his father as an elementary school principal and his mother teaching at the Wyoming School for the Deaf, Box developed an interest in reading despite the fact that the His family had no bookshelves of any kind. His interest in writing about himself led him to his high school newspaper, where he became an editor.

His presence in the newspaper earned the school newspaper national awards. after finishing high school, he went to the university of denver where he also joined the university newspaper. In addition to writing, Box was a ranch hand, fishing guide, and surveyor. After completing his formal education, he sought out agents to help him pursue a literary career, many of which led to disappointments.

spent a few years as a small-town newspaper reporter and sports editor for the saratoga sun. He and his wife then proceeded to start a tourism business, Rocky Mountain International, which became very successful due to his innovative ideas about promoting the Rocky Mountain area. He spends his time writing on a four-acre piece of land in Riverside, 20 miles south of Saratoga. His love of nature and wildlife is perfectly captured in his character as Joe Pickett, traversing adventures in the mountainous West, Yellowstone, Big Horn Mountains, and a host of other settings.

writing career

Box and his wife’s tourism marketing company was getting bigger. box then received the state tourism industry’s “big wyo” award, a trail of blood was published, reviving the joe pickett series by expanding the cast of characters and developing many of the earlier characters and plotlines.

finally, the novel was nominated for the impac literary prize in dublin (ireland). After Blood Trail was released, Box decided to write another novel that is not related to the Joe Pickett series. the idea spawned Blue Sky, a suspenseful drama featuring a twelve-year-old girl who witnesses an execution-style murder. blue heaven revealed box’s skill and versatility as a writer by writing on new topics, showcasing a fresh style, and dabbling in mystery fiction, a genre box wasn’t as well known for before.
The book later received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Mystery Novel of 2008. The following year, it launched another addition to the Joe Pickett series, Subzero. he then released another standalone novel, Three Weeks to Say Goodbye, another novel that contrasts sharply with the other box works. The Joe Pickett series continues with Below Zero, which was released in 2009, Nowhere to Run (2010), and Cold Wind (2011).
in 2011, he published back of beyond, another independent work under st. martin’s minotaur Box released Force of Nature (2012), which focused on the Nate Romanowski character, and Break Point (2013) as the latest installment in the series. he also finished his latest standalone novel, the road, another exploratory work by box, which features him working with suspense and suspense elements. This work was received with much praise because it adds a new dimension to the style of box writing.
despite this hint of experimentation, box still holds its definitive portrait of western life on the road. he also published three collections of short stories, dull knife (2005) (“a joe pickett story”, the master falconer (2006) and le sauvage noble (2007), all of them limited editions.
box recently announced on its website that it will publish a joe pickett book in march 2014 entitled stone cold.
