the first barrier¶
Watch the scenes that follow as Zorah Magdaros makes an unexpected entrance, as the Astera Hunters rush to implement their plan. For this first phase of the battle, there is little to do other than attack Zorah Magdaros with the available tools, most notably stationary cannons. there are also crossbows, but they do much less damage than cannons, although they will prove their worth later. collect cannonballs by finding their stores and pressing [circle]/[b], take them to the cannon and then charge them up. when a cannon has five cannonballs, fire by pressing [circle]/[b]. you can also change the target of the cannon by moving next to the cannon and pressing [circle]/[b].
after a while of shooting, some barnos will appear to complicate things. these weak monsters aren’t too strong, but the cannonballs follow the rules of carrying eggs: if you get hit, you’ll lose what you’re carrying, and these cannonballs are meant to be a nuisance. build a ballista by grabbing a bunch of bolts and loading them into the device (you don’t have to do as much effort to transport the bolts), then assemble the ballista and knock down the barnos, after which you can continue throwing zorah magdaros will fire cannonballs until you reach the barrier.

a wooden (albeit large) wall faces a mountainous monster made of magma. Was the result ever in doubt? After Zorah Magdaros imposes her will on the puny man-made fortifications, head to the southeast end of the artillery area, climb to reach the highest elevation, then interact with the grapple pole to fly onto Zorah Magdaros’s back.
round trip¶
brings back memories, doesn’t it? this time, however, you are a little better prepared, and therefore your goal is not just to survive, but to weaken the huge Elder Dragon. you can accomplish this by destroying some magma cores on its back, which looks like… well, a rocky magma spike. suffice it to say that it blends in with the rest of the beast. maybe it’s the equivalent of a grain of zorah magdaros? Be that as it may, don’t rush to destroy it, as you can explore the elder dragon’s back to find all kinds of mineral deposits (they look like normal mineral deposits, but the crystals are orange instead of blue) that can produce minerals rare like a zorah magdaros shell and dragonite ore.

When you’re done looking for minerals, find the Magma Core. you’ll know you’re around when the handler starts barking about it. additionally, you will take damage while you are nearby. Hurrah. persevere, and when the magmatic pustule fills you with fire, roll to put out the fire and continue attacking. when it’s finally destroyed, head to the east end of the elder dragon, then watch the cutscene that follows.
battle against the beast¶
once you regain control, you will find yourself facing a large monster. She’s not as big as Zorah Magdaros, but she’s certainly more of a threat right now. your goal here is not to secure victory, but simply to survive long enough to gain the support of your fellow hunters. constantly dodge and heal as needed, and after a while help will come and you can see how the attempt to capture zorah magdaros ends.
the consequences¶
after the debacle with zorah magdaros is over, you will automatically travel back to astera, where the commander will assess how things are. Though their resources may be depleted, they decide to fight on, opting instead to take advantage of a rift opened up by Zorah Magdaros’s activity. this unlocks a third area for you to explore: the great ravine. In addition, you will receive the Hunter Tool Health Enhancer as a reward. this item creates a cloud of restorative mist that you can place, which will heal you and all allies that walk into it… so it’s basically an infinite use area of effect healing item (albeit on a cooldown). not bad…
Before you go, there are a few people you can talk to in astera. Talk to the commander first, who will identify the monster that attacked you during the last mission as a nergigante, a beast that seems to have taken a special interest in Zorah Magdaros.

Next, head to the botanical research area and talk to the laid-back biologist, who will give you the Royal Relocation quest, tasking you with hunting a rathian…for science, of course!
the meowscular chef, in his relentless quest for profit, also has a new mission for you: get the yolk stuck in the woods. herbivore eggs are one thing, but for real profit, you need wyvern eggs!
Go visit the armory to find out that they’re selling new armor… though nothing you couldn’t have done a long, long time ago by now. Still, it’s worth checking out just to get rid of that exclamation mark, right?
Last and certainly not least, return to the rooms and speak to the housekeeper, who will inform you that your actions have earned you a quality of life upgrade in the form of a new room. choose the “move to a new room” option, then choose the “private quarters” option to move from the old living area to a more spacious and private abode. it’s not bad at all! this room has all the comforts of the old, with the benefit of more places for pets. In addition to the “floor” option that the house had, the private house has a “potted area”, a “tree”, a “roof” and two “aquariums”. nice.
with that, you’re done in astera for now, time to get back to the quests. As usual, the optional quests will be covered first, followed by the next task… which is actually an expedition to the great ravine.
