sabaa tahir is the author of the series an ember in the ashes. He made his debut in 2015 with the release of the first book in the series, An Ember in the Ashes. The novel was a huge success, peaking at number two on the New York Times bestseller list. The book has since been named one of the 100 best fantasy books of all time by Time magazine, along with its sequel, A Torch Against the Night.
tahir’s parents emigrated from pakistan to the united kingdom and then moved to the united states. She grew up in Ridgecrest, California, in the Mojave Desert region. As a child she enjoyed reading fantasy from a very young age. she also ransacked her brother’s stash of comics and played the guitar. When she was a child, Ella Sabaa Tahir often felt like an outcast and that she did not quite belong in the world in which she lived. Luckily for her, she found solace in literature. Literature has maintained a strong presence in Tahir’s life ever since. she has said that reading about her changed her life. when she grew up, she felt voiceless and powerless, but the fantasy books helped comfort her and, as she got older, she realized that she could find that sense of power and voice if she just started writing .

He had a creative mind when he was young and dreamed of becoming a pirate of the sea. however, her parents tried to push her towards a more responsible career and took her to medicine. she worked a short stint in a hospital before deciding it wasn’t for her and went on to study journalism instead.
sabaa would attend ucla where she studied journalism. An Ember in the Ashes is the first book in the series of the same name. The book focuses on two people, Leah and Elias. leah is a slave and elias is a soldier. however, none of them are free under the martial empire. in this place, challenge meets death. those who do not swear their lives and bodies to the emperor face the risk of execution not only of themselves, but also of their loved ones and all they hold dear. It is a brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, where Laia and Elias live.
laia lives with her grandparents and her older brother. they are not rich, they eke out a living in the back alleys of the empire. they know what happens to those who defy the empire and do their best to stay away from them. then everything changes when laia’s brother is arrested for treason. she wants to help him and makes a deal with the rebels. they will rescue her brother if he joins the empire’s military academy and spies for them.
laia accepts and at the military academy she meets elias, the best soldier in the school. he is also the most reluctant of them all. he wants nothing more than to be free from the tyranny he is being trained to uphold. elias and laia get closer and realize that their destinies are intertwined. the decisions they make together will change the destiny of the empire itself.
