The Hunger Games is a novel about Katniss Everdeen, who is forced to fight other children in an arena. The book takes place in Panem, which was once North America and has limited resources. to keep citizens under control, the government separates them into districts and reinforces class differences. however, their strongest tool to discourage rebellion is the annual Hunger Games: a televised event where two tributes from each district must fight to the death.
katniss lives in district 12, the poorest of all the districts. her father died and she has been supporting her family by poaching in the woods outside her district with her friend gale. On Harvest Day, Prim is selected as a tribute to represent District 12. Katniss volunteers to take her place and is allowed to be a part of the Hunger Games along with Peeta Mellark from District 11.
The rest of the novel follows Katniss and Peeta as they are trained for the games and prepared to portray a certain image. Their relationship becomes more difficult when Peeta admits that he has feelings for her during an interview, making it hard for them both to focus on winning. Haymitch suggests that they introduce themselves as friends who support each other to get sponsorships from others.

The games take place in a forest. Katniss can use her hunting skills and knowledge of the forest to develop a survival strategy. she sleeps in trees and hunts at night as she avoids the other tributes who have trained her whole life for these games. Each night, she watches as the faces of the dead are beamed into the sky from previous years’ games.
Meanwhile, game makers continue to manipulate the environment to keep games entertaining. Katniss is injured during a firestorm and gets trapped in a tree above her opponents. She contacts Rue, who reminds her of Prim, and suggests that she defeat her opponents by throwing a hornet’s nest at them. Katniss does, but she stings herself and nearly dies until Peeta helps save her life.
Katniss and Rue form an alliance to destroy the races’ supply of weapons by setting them on fire. They use land mines of a game maker design to blow up their supplies, but Katniss is knocked unconscious when he activates one of these mines as he attempts to destroy the supplies. she returns in time to see rue killed by another tribute which later becomes her first kill. As a small act against the capitol, which expects the tributes to dehumanize each other, Katniss sings a rue song before leaving her body as food for the wild animals that roam the arena.
The game makers announce that the rules have changed and that two tributes from a district can serve as co-victors. Katniss then finds Peeta, who was badly cut after helping her escape from the races. She does her best to help him get back on his feet, but she doesn’t understand why Haymitch sends her a gift until she kisses him.
In order to win the games, Katniss and Peeta spend days together in a cave getting closer. in the process, she learns that he has an infection that will kill him if not treated soon. the game makers announce that there will be a party where tributes can get supplies from sponsors. he figures out how to trick peeta into thinking she’s staying behind while he goes to get medicine for his wound. At the party, however, one of her opponents nearly kills her, but another tribute of hers saves her life because they found out what Katniss did for Rue during training when no one else wanted to help her.
the medicine katniss gave peeta worked and they were able to spend more time together in the cave. however, when their water supply ran out, they had to prepare for the next challenge from the game makers. it turned out it wasn’t cato but a group of wolf-like creatures that came from the bodies of dead tributes. Katniss and Peeta escaped by climbing to higher ground while another tribute fell and was killed by the creatures.
